WHAT IS CANVAS?

Canvas is a cloud-based learning management system (LMS) by Instructure. Canvas is a modern, easy-to-use, reliable and adaptable LMS that supports current and evolving teaching and learning needs.

WHAT ARE OTHER BENEFITS OF USING CANVAS?

Operating Canvas is very intuitive, mitigating the learning curve found in other learning management systems,
Canvas allows Faculty to see essential information about all their courses in one place,
The Canvas dashboard provides a clear summary of course events and items relevant to the student,
Canvas provides students with improved and simplified opportunities for collaboration with instructors and other students

WHAT IS A COLLEGE CHAMPION?

College Champions are selected faculty that is representing a college/department during the LMS transition. They are responsible for engaging their college in this transition and ensuring that LMS is properly setup and aligned with their college’s needs. College Champions will be participating in user testing, course migration, and faculty training during and after the LMS transition phases. They are the Canvas SMEs! Please visit the Champions site for a complete list of the College Champions and additional information.

ARE WE GOING TO BE TRAINED ON CANVAS?

We will host Canvas training workshops and Canvas migration support in the coming months. Training schedule will be announced once available. Currently, training is being offered only for the faculty champions and early adopters that will assist with testing and initial course migration. WHAT THIRD-PARTY TOOLS WILL BE AVAILABLE IN CANVAS?

Canvas will integrate with the required tools to support and enhance your classes and student experience. Canvas ARC and Blackboard Ally among other apps will be available in Canvas. Contact the Canvas Transition Team at canvasteam@uta.edu for a complete list of these third party tools.

CAN I USE CANVAS AS AN ONLINE TRAINING PLATFORM?

Canvas Training and Support Available for Non-Academic Uses
As the university transitions from Blackboard to Canvas, UTA's OIT Knowledge Services team will provide basic support and training to non-academic departments and users that want to utilize Canvas. Several training sessions will be offered to UTA’s non-academic staff, with overflow seats available for academic staff. Attendees will be introduced to Canvas with a 3-hour hands-on workshop where participants will receive an overview of the tools and the new system. An online module after the workshop will be a part of the course to reinforce the skills taught. Additionally, assistance and support to employees and departments who wish to utilize Canvas for non-academic purposes will be available on an ongoing basis.

MOVING TO CANVAS

 

WHEN IS CANVAS GOING TO BE AVAILABLE TO ALL CAMPUS USERS?

The transition will begin Spring 2019 with a select group of courses scheduled for Summer 2019. More information on an opt-in process will be made available soon for instructors who are interested in becoming early adopters and transitioning to Canvas for Spring 2019. Starting in Summer 2019, all courses previously using Blackboard will be taught in Canvas LMS. Additional information regarding course migration schedule and instructions is available in the Canvas Migration page.

CAN I BE PART OF THE EARLY ADOPTERS?

Yes. Currently, we selected a small number of courses to pilot Canvas in Spring 2019. They will help test our system integration and help us identify issues or glitches to fix before we roll out to the entire campus in Summer 2019. If you are interested to learn more about the pilot and/or become an early adopter please contact your College Champions to request participation. They will be able to review your request and add you to the list of early adopters. Find College Champions and contact information here.

CAN I TEACH MY SPRING 2019 CLASSES IN CANVAS?

We selected a small number of courses to pilot Canvas in Spring 2019. They will help test our system integration and help us identify issues or glitches to fix before we roll out to the entire campus in Summer 2019. If you are interested to be part of the pilot program, please contact your College Champions to request participation. HOW DO I MIGRATE MY COURSES FROM BLACKBOARD TO CANVAS?

Currently, this migration is taking place by groups.  For details regarding schedule and steps, please visit the Canvas Migration page. In addition, the Migration Forms page has some valuable materials to assist our Faculty with this conversion. To confirm when your course will be migrated, please contact your College Champion.

WHO DO I NEED TO CONTACT IF I HAVE QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS TRANSITION?

HOW DO I ACCESS UTA'S CANVAS?

Go to uta.instructure.com and log in using your UTA email. Or click on the Canvas link at the top of UTA's main page (next to the Blackboard link) at www.uta.edu. For detail instructions, you can also refer to the Canvas Login User Guide available in our Canvas Training page. 

WHY CAN'T I ACCESS ANY COURSES IN CANVAS?

Online courses are being migrated from Blackboard to Canvas in controlled groups.

Faculty: You will only have access to courses in Canvas if you’re part of an active migration group. Please contact your Canvas College Champion to sign up for a migration group and the "Growing with Canvas" course. 

Students: You will only have access to courses in Canvas if your instructor has informed you that your course(s) will be taught in Canvas for a specific semester. Please check your UTA email for any notifications.

WHAT IS CANVAS?

WHERE DO I FIND CANVAS TRAINING?

Students can complete the Canvas Student Training Course to effectively learn how to navigate in Canvas. Students can also review other training tools, and access them to help on the Training for Students page.

HOW DO I ACCESS CANVAS?

Students can access their courses by clicking on the Canvas link on the UTA home page, or through myapps.uta.edu. Students will be prompted by UTA’s Single Sign-on to enter their password.

I AM HAVING ISSUES WITH ACCESSING THE COURSE CONTENT IN CANVAS, WHAT DO I DO?

If you are unable to access your course content in Canvas, please contact your course instructor. If you are having any technical issues, please contact the Canvas Support Hotline line at 1-855-597-3401.

DO I STILL TO USE BLACKBOARD?

Yes. The LMS transition from Blackboard to Canvas will begin Spring 2019 with the pilot group and the following course migration will take place by groups. During the Spring transition, students and instructors will be using both systems as we migrate. Starting in Summer 2019, all courses previously using Blackboard will be taught in Canvas LMS. Additional information regarding to Canvas, course migration schedule and instructions will be provided as migration progresses.
