Summary:
- Fireflies are among the most charismatic insects on Earth, yet little is known about their microbiome, which could influence firefly biology and ecology.
- We studied the bacterial symbionts of North American fireflies and found that microbial composition and abundance differ drastically across predatory, nectar-eating, and non-eating firefly species.
- Several firefly species commonly associate with their own symbiont species from a single group of bacteria, called the Mollicutes.
- Future work will aim to uncover the roles of firefly-associated bacterial symbionts and retrace the evolution of symbiont partnerships in fireflies.
