Emergency Dissertation Scholarship

Program Purpose

The Emergency Dissertation Scholarship supports completion and defense of the PhD dissertation for students who have encountered unexpected financial distress. Such unexpected distress includes, but is not limited to, financial consequences of losing employment, losing employer-provided tuition benefits, and medical or family emergencies impairing the ability to pay tuition.

Award Information

The Emergency Dissertation Scholarship provides an amount equal to tuition and mandatory fees at the in-state rate for up to 9 credits of dissertation courses in the student’s program for no more than two long semesters. This is not a competitive scholarship, and it does not qualify non-resident students for in-state tuition rates. Awards are subject to the availability of funds.

Applicant Eligibility

Students are eligible if they have passed the Comprehensive Examination, the dissertation proposal defense (if applicable), have completed all coursework except for dissertation hours, and are able to complete and defend the dissertation within two long semesters of their nomination.

Students are not eligible if they have lost employment through voluntary resignation, or through termination for poor performance or other good cause, or if they are in distress because of other voluntary actions or inactions.

Application Process

Applications are not accepted directly from students. Students must be nominated by their dissertation supervisor, graduate advisor, program director, or department chair. There is no deadline and nominations may be submitted at any time. Please e-mail graduate.studies@uta.edu to request access to the nomination form.
