Unit Signatures

The signature represents your unit, sub-unit, or degree and serves as your unit’s official logo. No other marks or logos are permitted to represent units, sub-units, or degrees, except for federal grant-sponsored programs that have their own approved logos.

Efforts to distinguish your unit should focus on messaging and storytelling within your marketing materials rather than creating independent logos. Customized signatures integrate the unit’s name with the UTA logo, following these guidelines:

  • Templates and Variations: Signatures are available in various orientations (centered, left-aligned, horizontal), sizes (long or short versions), and color variations. The option to include degree names is also offered.
  • Typography: Signatures use Frutiger 55 Roman font with specific tracking settings: -50 for primary text and -10 for smaller, all-caps text.

Requesting a Signature

To request a customized signature, use the online form at go.uta.edu/signature-request. Allow 24-48 hours for processing, depending on workload. Please provide a realistic due date to accommodate the creation process.

Signatures as Logos

Signatures combine the “UTA” initials logomark with the unit name and, if applicable, sub-unit name. This combination constitutes your official logo. Units, sub-units, and academic entities are not permitted to create separate logos, as this reduces the effectiveness and impact of the University’s brand identity.

Long Versions

  • These signatures include the unit type, unit name, sub-unit type, and sub-unit name.
  • Departments with only a sub-unit name are also classified as long versions.

Short Versions

  • These signatures exclude the unit type, displaying only the unit name. The unit type is always featured prominently above the name.
  • Short versions are reserved for situations with space limitations or specific audience considerations and are not the preferred format.
  • Both long and short versions must pair the unit name and sub-unit name consistently. Mixing long and short formats within the same design is not permitted.
  • The order of the unit and sub-unit may be reversed when necessary.
  • In rare cases where space constraints impact design, special exceptions may allow sub-unit short or long versions to be used alone.

Degree Signatures

  • Degree names may now be included in signatures.
  • There are no short versions for degree signatures; they must always be paired with the college name rather than a sub-unit.

Acronyms or Initialisms

Acronyms or initialisms are not used in unit or sub-unit signatures.

Use of “And” Versus “&”

All signatures must use “and” instead of the ampersand (&).

Naming Convention

To maintain consistency in file organization, signature logos should follow this standardized naming format:

Example: Training_Program-1.blk-ct-lgsm-sub-both

Formula: [Identifier-name].[color]-[orientation]-[name+type = lg, type only = sh][font size][headliner]-[does it feature both]

Naming Components

  1. Identifier Name: The unique name of the signature.
  2. Color Description:
    • cmyk = Full color (blue, orange, and black)
    • blk = Black
    • wht = All white
    • wht-orng = White with orange star
  3. Alignment:
    • ct = Center aligned
    • lf = Left aligned
    • hz = Horizontal aligned
  4. Type and Size:
    • lg = Long version (includes sub-unit and unit type)
    • sh = Short version (excludes sub-unit type and unit type)
    • lgsm/shsm = Smaller font versions of the long and short versions
  5. Unit or Sub-Unit Inclusion:
    • sub = Contains sub-unit but not unit
    • unit = Contains unit but not sub-unit
  6. Both Unit and Sub-Unit Inclusion:
    • both = Includes both unit and sub-unit

Note: If the sub-unit name is more prominently displayed, use sub for item E. If the unit name is more prominent, use unit for item E. This structured approach ensures consistency and simplifies file identification across branding materials.
