Student Organizations
There are two types of student organizations at UTA: registered (non-sponsored) and sponsored. Each category follows distinct rules regarding branding and logo use.
Important: Both registered and sponsored student organizations must use licensed vendors when producing products that feature University logos or text.
- Common misconception: It is often mistakenly believed that student organizations are exempt from University branding reviews. This is incorrect.
- All products require review by UTA’s Office of Marketing, Messaging, and Engagement and UT System’s Licensing Department for compliance.
Registered (Non-Sponsored) Student Organizations
Registered student organizations are approved by the Division of Student Affairs but are not considered official extensions of the University. These groups often include organizations like fraternities, sororities, and clubs that raise their own funds for operations.
In accordance with UT System Board of Regents Rule 50202, the following policies apply:
- Prohibited Use of the University Name:
Registered student, faculty, or staff organizations may not use the University’s name or its abbreviations as part of their official name. - Restrictions on Branding:
Registered organizations may not use the University name, abbreviations, or seal on signs, banners, printed materials, or in association with their activities. - Sponsorship Clarity:
Registered organizations may not promote events, activities, or materials in a manner that suggests they are sponsored by UTA.
- Registered student organizations may use the University’s name in plain text but cannot include it as part of their official organization name.
- Whenever possible, include the word “at” before the University name to clarify the affiliation.
Correct Usage Examples:
- Incorrect: UTA Chess Club
- Correct: Chess Club at UTA or Chess Club – UTA Chapter
These formats clarify that the organization operates at UTA but is not an official entity of the University.
When using the University’s name, the following approved forms must be used:
- The University of Texas at Arlington™
- UTA™
The trademark symbol (™) must be included unless it is illegible due to small imprint sizes.
Sponsored Student Organizations
Sponsored student organizations maintain an official partnership with a University academic or administrative unit. Sponsorship implies that the University provides:
- Support
- Endorsement
- Supervision
- Accountability for the actions and activities of the organization
Examples include the Student Government Association and Sport Clubs.
- Sponsored student organizations may use official UTA logos and the University name on products, provided they comply with the University Branding Guidelines.
- All branded materials must be produced by a licensed vendor and undergo the branding review process for approval.
