College of Architecture, Planning and Public Affairs

Highlighting impactful teaching in the College of Architecture, Planning and Public Affairs.

I have taken 3 courses with Dr. Paul now. Dr. Paul provides well laid-out, engaging classes that allow for student creativity. Dr. Paul’s class structure over the semester is clear, with relevant readings for each topic. She provides ample opportunity for class discussions and genuinely enjoys engaging with students. She is also supportive of students with interests, allowing a wide variety of topics for items such as final presentations, as long there is a clearly defined link to the class. She was a new professor when I first had her as a professor, and I have enjoyed seeing her improve and tweak her teaching style since she first started. She makes her classes very engaging, seems to sincerely care about her students’ wellbeing and success, and makes us feel relaxed and at home in class.
Professor: Dr. Julene Paul
Michael Malone is one of the most organized and clear instructors I’ve had. His guidance is always direct, structured, and easy to follow, yet he also encourages creativity and truly appreciates the effort each student puts into the work. Beyond being an excellent teacher, he is a genuinely good human being. He cares about his students’ success, checks in on them, and uses his professional connections to help graduates find opportunities even in a very challenging job market. He is always approachable, supportive, and welcomes his students with a smile.
Professor: Michael James Malone
Professor Rusher inspires students to think about architecture as more than just walls floors and roofs. He inspires students to think of architecture as an experience and encourages students to think of how the architecture makes the user feel when they are in the space. I was lucky to be able to take this professor as I believe his class was the one that influenced me most and helped me to grow most as a designer. He teaches students how to generate ideas and rewards originality. Overall Professor Rusher is one of the most innovative professors at UTA and his teaching approach is unique and inspiring.

I look forward to Professor Mora class every week! Even though her class is in the field I want to work in after graduation, so I have a bias towards the major, but she makes it even more interesting and has solidified my decision to pursue Marketing Research. She expects great things from her students and I can tell she cares, she’s strict but fair and she classes run very smoothly, she’s always prepared. I look up to her a lot. Just an amazing professor, truly an expert at her craft. She knows how to make students feel immediately welcomed and comfortable speaking in her course. I am autistic and hate speaking in almost any occasion, but I find myself wanting to answer questions and communicate. Getting to be a part of her course is truly an honor.
Professor: Michaela Mora

Professor: Dr. Nicholas Mitchell
Dr. Regalado is one of those rare professors who doesn’t just teach, she transforms. From the moment I met her, I could tell she genuinely sees the potential in every student. She doesn’t just help people with assignments or career advice; she helps them discover who they are and what they’re capable of. She goes out of her way to support others, whether that means staying late to talk through a problem, connecting students with resources and opportunities, or simply believing in them during times when they don’t believe in themselves. For me, she changed everything. She helped me find direction, confidence, and a sense of purpose I didn’t even know I was searching for. She owns a HR company which helps make the topics she is teaching make sense. Since she can use real world examples.

College of Engineering

Highlighting impactful teaching in the College of Engineering.

Catherine Kilmain spent almost 20 years of her life serving Bell as a VP of Engineering, so she is quite able to bridge the gap between theory and practicality, something lacking in UTA's Engineering Program. She is also able to use concepts that we, the young generation, identify with, or at least, recognize. Finally, she pretty funny.
Professor: Dr. Catherine Kilmain
Professor Gautam's course on Advanced Algorithms (CSE 6311) has added a lot of nuances to how I engage with and experience Computer Science as a discipline. The way his material connects algorithmic theory with real-world applications across artificial intelligence and databases has been very educational for me. Professor Das is very charismatic and truly cares for his students, which makes even a challenging course such as Advanced Algorithms feel approachable and genuinely exciting.

Dr. Carpenter is an incredibly supportive and patient educator. Throughout the course, he provided detailed, one-on-one walk-throughs for every step, ensuring that no student was left behind. His classroom is a place where everyone is given an equal opportunity to participate and learn. More than just an instructor, he has been a "peaceful shelter" for me throughout the semester, creating a warm and welcoming environment for everyone. I would like to give a huge shout-out to Dr. Carpenter as he prepares for his upcoming retirement! Thank you so much for your dedication and for always greeting us with a warm smile. I truly appreciate his dedication to encouraging students to think deeper.

Studying abroad in Panama was an incredible experience and one of the highlights of my MBA journey. FINA 5331 quickly became my favorite course—not just because of the content, but because of how immersive the learning experience was. The program went beyond the classroom, giving us real, hands-on exposure to global business and finance in action. From engaging with diverse course materials to learning directly from instructors with different perspectives and expertise, every part of the experience challenged me to think bigger and more globally. This opportunity strengthened both my academic understanding and real-world insight—something I’ll carry with me well beyond the program.
Course: FINA 5331 (Abroad)
I am currently in her English 1302 class, and she is an amazing professor. She builds up me and my classmates as writers. In previous classes I have been told I am not a good writer or that I would be able to make it in a college English class. Dr. Abelanet has showed me that, that is not the truth she has helped me become a better writer and student.
Professor: Kathy Ann Abelanet
He has the most engaging lectures I've ever experienced from a teacher or professor.
Professor: Dr. Jason E Shelton
Professor Dolezal exceeds expectations not only as professor but as a practicing designer. I have taken Ben for 3 classes over my time at UTA, and each time I have gained hands on experience with design and transferable skills. Ben is one of my favorite professors because he makes every class genuinely enjoyable. He’s funny, witty, and always keeps things engaging, which makes it easy to stay interested and motivated. He’s also incredibly helpful and explains design concepts in a way that actually makes sense. You can tell he really cares about his students and wants them to succeed. He’s easily one of the best design professors I’ve had, and his class is always something I look forward to.
Professor: Benjamin P Dolezal
Yes! Moot Court is a ton of fun. We get to learn about the most important Supreme Court cases of the last two centuries, compile an argument, practice speaking, and most importantly, we get to do it all with Judge Taylor, certainly the warmest professor I've had the privilege of knowing at UTA, as well as the funniest and brightest.
Professor: Christopher Lynn Taylor, JD
The most personable and engaging professor I’ve ever had. She’s helped me tremendously not only with her courses but within the work force as well. So very helpful and willing.
Professor: Beth Anne Shelton

I am gaining a profound understanding and reflection on the Korean language through this course. Dr. Kim is truly passionate about Korea and goes above and beyond to share that deep love and cultural insight with all the students. A special shout-out to Dr. Kim! I am deeply grateful for the profound understanding and reflection on the Korean language I have gained through your guidance. This instructor is amazing and I always enjoy her class every time I am there, and I enjoy being a part of the class. She is really inspiring especially in the mornings and when it is early for 8am her positivity always wakes me up even more. Very engaging teaching style, always helping students. Genuinely wants students to do well, would love to take her class again. (ENGL 2329) Shaffer is clearly very passionate about her job and cares deeply for each individual student, and educators like her are extremely rare. Her classroom is the most welcoming environment on this campus for me.

Professor: Geoffrey Campbell
I have never liked a professor or class more than Dr. Ingram’s. She challenges us by opening critical discussions about the world, people, and things, and the conversations that amount in class are infinitely interesting. She brings a positive and inviting attitude to every class, while keeping us accountable to our obligations. By far the most interesting and enjoyable class I’ve ever taken, and she absolutely inspires deeper connection and thought to the course matter.
Professor: Dr. Penelope (Penny) Ingram
He is a great professor who helps people catch up on their work, has a good sense of humor, and likes to tell stories during class.
Professor: Frederick Miller
Great GLOBAL Lectures, fun activities and nice course pace.
Professor: Alexandria M Gray
Professor Choi taught me Korean for two years, but it felt like I knew her longer than that. She had a way of engaging her students into the language and the culture and also took time to make sure we understood the course. I think about her often now that I am no longer in her course and get very excited any chance I get to see her around campus. More students need a language professor like her. She is amazing at what she does, and I wish I could take Korean classes with her forever. She’s the reason I hope to travel to Korea in 2027. Professor Choi is very passionate about teaching, and it shows very well in the classroom. She turns every lesson into something fun and enjoyable by telling stories about her life in Korea and she truly gets to know students personally. She is very understanding about the struggles or learning a second language and does all that she can to help her students succeed.
Professor: Hyuna Choi

It is her first semester here in the U.S teaching at a university, and she is doing wonderfully with connecting with the students. It is also my first semester here at UTA, and she is the first class I have in the mornings. I want to take a moment to recognize Dr. Kyrah Brown for her incredible leadership and commitment to advancing maternal health and reproductive equity. Through her work at UTA and the Maternal and Reproductive Health Equity Research Lab, she not only produces groundbreaking research but also ensures that the voices of Black women and marginalized communities are centered in the conversation. Her dedication to mentorship has been transformative, inspiring students like me to connect academic training with advocacy and systems change. Dr. Brown models what it means to lead with purpose, compassion, and impact — and I am grateful for the opportunity to learn from her example.

Professor Wyman gives us confidence that we can and will finish nursing school. She motivates us to do our best and always provides encouragement, even when the work gets tough. I know I can always count on her if I have any questions or need help. She truly goes above and beyond for her students an amazing professor and mentor.
Professor: Paula Wyman
At the end of each shift, she takes time to talk with every student individually to review homework, clarify any questions, and reinforce key learning points. She even turns learning into a fun and engaging experience by creating games. One of my favorite moments was when she asked me about a patient with an NG tube and wanted me to list five reasons why the patient might have it. That activity completely changed how I study — it helped me think critically and retain information better. Professor Polk-Davis is an amazing clinical instructor who truly wants her students to succeed and become great nurses with both skill and heart.
Professor: Sonya Polk-Davis
I just want to say a big thank you to Professor Houston for everything she has done. She truly cares about her students and goes the extra mile to make sure we understand the material and feel supported. Her PowerPoints, teaching style, and communication make a huge difference. She is patient, professional, and very compassionate. I’m so thankful for her understanding, especially during challenging times. She inspires me to keep going and to become the kind of nurse who shows the same kindness and support she gives her students.
Professor: Dinah Marie Houston
Professor Roberts remains positive despite the circumstances. I love her personality and teaching style. Professor Roberts was able to break down and dissect complicated concepts and help me understand the information in a much simpler manner. Her personal and group review sessions were contributing factors of me making an A in the class. Professor Roberts and the AO student success center are such major components and necessities of helping me succeed the AO BSN program and for excelling in my classes. Without them, I do not think I would have made it this far. I have such immense gratitude and appreciation for Professor Roberts. Her positive energy, warm smile, and encouraging attitude gave me the inspiration I needed to do better on my next tests. She truly cares about her students and wants to see us succeed. She was amazing! Professor Roberts made me look forward to scheduling online study sessions. I was excited to attend and always left feeling uplifted and encouraged.

Professor: Katie Marie Mclean
She was always eager to educate her students and was always available to assist.
Professor: Alyssa Peterson
He has made the transition into upper division nursing classes much less scary! He has such a welcoming presence!
Professor: Mr. Michael Holmes
She is hilarious, which made check offs less stressful and made me look forward to every clinical. She will answer multiple questions in a row without getting impatient. She expects a lot out of you, but not more than she expects out of herself. You could tell she cares about doing her best because she: put effort into grading assignments so we could grow, knew every one of our names and personalities, was organized, and cared about our feelings and success. I grew so much having her as my clinical professor because even when I was meeting the standard she told me how I could improve. You can tell that she truly loves her job because she always smiles and says, “y'all are so funny.” I think almost all of her students were inspired by her and she has made a huge impact on my future as a nurse.
Professor: Jade Iloka
Shaun helped us feel like we could succeed no matter what, if we really tried and wanted it bad enough and encouraged us not to give up when things got hard. He pushed us in a way that didn't feel like "nurses eating their young" but in a way that showed he really did care about making us whole, well-rounded better nurses for our future.
Professor: Shaun Kelemen
Professor Roundtree made it easy to learn so much information in a small amount of time. I think she was so supportive, and it really felt she cared about those she was teaching to ensure they succeeded. OB was not a favorite subject for me, but it inspired me to understand more about it but even with recorded lectures it still felt like I was being taught rather than someone just reading from a PowerPoint.
Professor: Rebecca Ann Rountree
She went extra and beyond by making engaging materials for us to study in class. She really helped me get through the course and has an amazing teaching style. Prof. Hughes makes extremely difficult concepts easy to digest. She teaches with a deep sense of love for her students and a passion for her craft that inspires us to want to learn. Any student who has the opportunity to study with her is a very lucky student who has a high chance of success! I love her teaching style and how she makes the lectures enjoyable. She is truly doing the Lords work on earth and she will be missed :(.
Professor: Ms. Deborah Hughes
The two chem professors I had (William Cleaver & Dr Snow) are the most jovial professors I've had, and even though I'm awful at chemistry I really enjoyed the class. When I took zoology the lab professor was Daniella, I really liked her honesty and very nice to talk to.

Mr. Silva teaches pre-Cal and calculus 1. He advises people about upcoming tests in every assignment. He prepares us with multiple packets to study, giving the student enough resources to rely on. He also notifies students about PLTL, study group session, and office hours. He helps students in any way or form. He was really supportive when I was struggling with enrolling in his class and openly suggested I keep attending despite not being his official student. It worked out in the end thanks to his help and he's a great teacher overall. Professor Silva is always open to questions and always gives clear, simple answers that really cover the basics of what student's need in order to understand a bigger topic.
Professor: Juan Carlos Silva Jr.

Professor: Heather Hewer
Dr. Shipman can make you enjoy any class because she cares about the subject matter and cares about you. She has a wacky style of teaching that has the ability to engage you. I’m never bored in her class. She grades promptly and goes over homework in class. This makes effort and understanding more tangible and rewarding. She is constantly seeking to improve her teaching based on student feedback. She takes an extremely active role in teaching us. Her class makes me feel like I can succeed, not because the coursework is easy, but because she rewards effort and encourages students to ask questions. She talks the talk and walks the walk. She puts in as much work as we do. I have an extreme degree of respect for her level of integrity.
Professor: Dr. Barbara A Shipman
Extremely approachable and passionate professor. In lectures, Dr. Laurel is very precise and direct when executing various problems. He takes the time necessary to help everyone willing to learn. Sweetest man and he actually want students to understand the concepts he’s teaching. He doesn’t blankly read off slides; he has students fill in notes which keeps it engaging and an active learning process. Going to his class doesn’t feel like a chore the way the rest of my classes do.
