PROGRAM OVERVIEW
Painting at UTA prepares students to become working artists. We embrace a wide range of conceptual and material approaches where the tradition of painting is developed, examined, and challenged. It is a safe and open community with a focus on engaging painting in the 21st century.
INSIDE THE STUDIO
The Painting studio at UTA is a dynamic space where students acquire and refine their skills with rigorous technical instruction and hands-on experience.
Students have access to a fully equipped wood shop; a fabrication lab complete with 3D printers, CNC routers, laser cutters, and large-format printers and scanners; well-lit studios furnished with painting carts and easels; and a large critique space.
All painting students take Beginning Painting, Intermediate Painting, and several semesters of Advanced Painting during their time at UTA. Once they complete the required introductory classes they can choose from other exciting upper-division courses such as Water Media, Digital Painting, New Directions in Painting, the Mural, Intersections in Painting and Sculpture, and the Contemporary Portrait to name a few.
STUDENT AND ALUMNI ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Adrian Zuñiga named Director of Various Small Fires
Adrian graduated with a BFA in Painting from UTA in 2012 before going on to receive an MA in Contemporary art from Sotheby's Institute of Art in London in 2017. While an undergraduate he worked as an intern at Dallas gallery Galleri Urbane, before returning as there as Director of Exhibitions upon completing his MA. After 8 years at Galleri Urbane, he accepted an offer as Director at new Dallas gallery, Various Small Fires.
Tiara Francois completes residency at Sulfur Studios
Tiara graduated with a BFA in Painting from UTA in 2022. She has been prolific as an undergraduate showing in many juried and curated exhibitions across Texas including 500x in Dallas and Martha's Contemporary in Austin. Upon completing her BFA in the Spring of 2022, she went on to complete a new body of work the following summer at the artist residency at Sulfur Studios in Savannah, Georgia.
Francisco Moreno exhibits at the Dallas Museum of Art
Francisco completed a BFA in Painting from UTA in 2010 before going on to receive an MFA in Painting from RISD in 2012. He has exhibited work internationally, received numerous grants from such institutions as the Nasher Sculpture Center and the Dallas Museum of Art, been published in New American Paintings, and completed residencies in Italy and Spain. His large scale installation, "Chapel" was added to the permanent collection of the Dallas Museum of Art, and recently exhibited in "For a Dreamer of Houses" at the museum.

COURSES
Transparent and opaque water color media and techniques. Emphasis on conceptual and manipulative skills. May be repeated for credit. Prerequisite: ART 1307 or permission of the instructor.
Continued development of painting techniques, composition and exploration of traditional and contemporary media. Specific problem solving assignments, creative thinking, and idea development will be emphasized. Prerequisite: ART 2308, 2371 or permission of the instructor.
Students will be encouraged to develop a personal direction which complements their development as visual thinkers. The student will be required to plan a course outline of conceptual development with the instructor at the beginning of each semester. May be repeated for credit. Student must earn a grade of “B” or above in the course to repeat it. Prerequisite: ART 2308, ART 2371 and a grade of B or above in ART 3371 or permission of the instructor. Transfer students will be required to schedule a portfolio review with the painting instructor to gain permission to enroll in the class.
Special Studies courses will explore various contemporary topics in painting. The specific content focus of this course will change semester by semester.
