09: Flexible Attendance and Makeups

Purpose of This Accommodation

UTA students are expected to attend class and meet assignment and exam deadlines. However, some disabilities involve unpredictable flare‑ups that may occasionally prevent attendance or timely submission of coursework.

In these cases, Flexible Attendance and/or Makeup of Quizzes/Exams and/or Makeup of Out of Class Assignments may be an appropriate accommodation approved by the Student Access & Resource Center (SAR Center).

This accommodation:

  • Applies only when disability‑related episodes occur
  • Does not allow unlimited absences or open‑ended extensions
  • Does not replace course expectations
  • Must be balanced with essential course requirements, departmental policies, and accreditation standards

Important Information for Faculty

  • This is not a blanket excuse to miss class.
  • Faculty must honor the accommodation from the date of FNL, even if they respond late.
  • Retroactive accommodations are not required.
  • Students are never required to provide medical documentation to the faculty directly. The Student Access and Resource (SAR) Center will verify the documentation before sending the notice of the accommodation usage. Only disability‑related absences count toward this accommodation.
  • Faculty are not required to re‑teach missed material.
