Auditing a Course

  • Students auditing a course are required to comply with Texas state legislation that mandates those who have not been continuously enrolled at UT Arlington must have received the bacterial meningitis vaccine within the past five years. For more information see Meningitis Requirement.
  • Auditing consists of the privilege of hearing and observing only, with no active participation, such as submitting papers, taking part in class discussions or receiving a credit for the course. Participation is at the discretion of the instructor.
  • Audited courses will appear with a grade of ‘AU’ on an academic transcript. Courses with the ‘AU’ grade cannot be dropped once added, do not earn academic credit, and do not qualify students for advanced standing examinations.
  • Arrangements to audit a course may only be made during the late registration period each semester, during business hours (8 am - 5 pm) on weekdays. See UT Arlington's academic calendar for specific dates.
  • Auditing approval is contingent upon availability in each class and on departmental regulations. Academic departments may place restrictions on the privilege of auditing. Instructors, academic departments and the Office of the Registrar may deny permission to audit courses.
  • Final approval will be made by the Office of the Registrar and may supersede the instructor's approval. Among the criteria the Office of the Registrar will review will be the auditing requestor's age as it relates to compliance with the meningitis legislation.
  • Activity courses (including scuba diving), labs, Accelerated Online courses, and courses requiring certain computer licenses are not auditable.
  • The audit fee is non-refundable.
  • A student who audits a class must have a valid UTA parking permit. The parking permit cost is in addition to the audit fee.
