A team of computer science students and their advisors won the Best Student Paper Award at the 22nd Intelligent User Interfaces Conference in Cyprus March 13-16.

IUI Best Student Paper AwardThe paper, entitled “CogniLearn: A Deep Learning-Based Interface for Cognitive Behavior Assessment”, earned top honors from among 180 submissions. It was authored by Ph.D. students Srujana Gattupalli and Michalis Papakostas, senior Dylan Ebert, and faculty advisors Fillia Makedon and Vassilis Athitsos.

“It was an honor to receive the best student paper award at the 22nd IUI Conference for our work. We strive to drive our research toward building computing systems to positively contribute towards human good and we hope to continue doing good work in AI and computer vision,” said Gattupalli.

The paper describes a novel tool, with architecture based on modern artificial intelligence and computer vision techniques, that will help cognitive therapists assess children who may suffer from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. ADHD symptoms are related to inattention, inability to follow instructions, distractibility and hyperactivity and may lead to working memory development problems, poor academic performance, low self-esteem and self-acceptance.  To create the tool, the team computerized and provided a compact user interface module, with a state-of-the art backend mechanism, to assist the human experts in performing and evaluating the HTKS game, which is an established method used as a measure of behavioral self-regulation, cognitive flexibility, working memory, and inhibitory control.

“I was very pleased to hear that our team won this award. It is a good indication of the quality of research from their group, and I look forward to many more successes in the future,” said Hong Jiang, Nedderman Professor and Chair of the Computer Science and Engineering Department.
