Our work should be something that impacts the community we live in and the community beyond ourselves and service learning really takes that into the classroom."

Entering UTA in 2021, Erick Jones was a relatively new Assistant Professor in industrial manufacturing and systems engineering. He has illuminated his research persona in getting solutions to help people and incorporate service learning where it may fit.

Erick's interest in service learning comes from seeing students from a statistics course participate by getting data from the community. After receiving news about the program, he decided to sign up and learn more about it.

Being a part of the fellows program, Erick enjoyed the discussions amongst the fellows because they were analyzing the same material with a variety of perspectives that develops into learning from each other. With some insight from the program, Erick plans to gather community organizers in preparations to apply service learning into one of his courses.

When Erick was in the early stages of implementing service learning into courses, he related to faculty members hesitant about integrating a service-learning component. Erick would advise faculty to follow the methodology and research criteria by going through the fellows program and read the book to help with the structure.
