Students are back on campus at The University of Texas at Arlington campus with a hopeful mindset for a new semester in the new year.

Sharon Obaisi is a freshmen studying nursing who attended the Maverick Friendzy event on Friday January 24.

“I’m excited for a fresh start and new classes,” she said. The Friendzy was one of several events that compose Maverick Stampede, UTA’s kickoff event to welcome new and returning students to campus for the new semester. Maverick Friendzy is a high-energy, team-building experience designed to create connections among students.

Patrick Kelly, director of student activities, said he encourages students to attend campus events as a way to learn about UTA and meet other Mavericks.

“I hope that students meet friends, find ways to get involved on campus, enjoy themselves and get ready for a great semester,” Kelly said. “These events are designed specifically to introduce students to others in a fast-paced atmosphere.”

The majority of the events held during Maverick Stampede are organized by student leaders. Freshman Anna Nguyen is part of UTA’s EXCEL Campus Activities, which functions as the students' voice for campus programming.

“I’m looking forward to planning more events for the student body,” Nguyen said. “When you join EXCEL, you get to plan these events, and you can bring your own opinion to the table to create a community for UTA.”
