Maddalena elected fellow

The Royal Aeronautical Society has elected Luca Maddalena, UTA professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering, as a fellow of the world's oldest professional body dedicated to the aerospace community, Bioengineer.org, Scienmag and 7thSpace reported.

New groundwater study

A study led by environmental researchers at UTA suggests a disconnect between the perception of groundwater contamination and the extent to which that contamination is attributable to oil and natural gas extraction, Smart Water Magazine reported. Kevin Schug, Shimadzu Distinguished Professor of Analytical Chemistry and co-founder and director of CLEAR, led the study along with CLEAR co-founder Zacariah Hildenbrand.

Common addresses UTA

Common, a rapper, actor, film producer, activist and poet, spoke to the Mavericks Speaker Series crowd at College Park Center Tuesday night, the Dallas Observer reported.

Retail struggles

Traci Freling, a UTA associate professor in marketing in the College of Business, said big anchor retail stores are struggling, KXAN NBC 21 in Austin reported. The original story about Macy’s new specialty store format ran on KXAS NBC 5.

Voice of Big Tex dies

Robert “Bob” Boykin, the voice of Big Tex, the 55-foot-tall cowboy who stands at the entrance to the State Fair of Texas, died recently, KERAnews.org, WBAP 820 AM and the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported. Boykin graduated from UTA with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics in 1968.

Expanding Via

The city of Arlington is expanding its Via rideshare service area, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported. Major destinations include UTA. The expanded service area now encompasses approximately 41% of the city’s land area and 191,000 people, or about half of the city’s population.

Security measures

Texas A&M University-Commerce announced stepped-up security measures following a deadly shooting last week, The Dallas Morning News reported. The story said UTA has security measures already in place, including a card-access system at each residence hall entrance as well as to the areas where the student rooms are. Some residence halls have rooms that also require an access card to enter.
