Supporting international students

Interim UTA President Teik Lim said in a university-wide email on Wednesday that the institution is commited to supporting its international students by indentifying solutions for them that comply with federal regulations, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported. "Our international students are being contacted directly with more information. We are also scheduling listening sessions for international students to receive further information and ask questions, for early next week," he said.

New immigrant regulations

In response to new federal guidance regarding the immigration status of international students, UTA is working to ensure a fair and effective educational environment, KDFW FOX 4 reported. The new U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement guidance states that as long as the course load for an international student contains a mix of online and in-person classes, they can remain in the U.S. But if only enrolled in online courses, they must either transfer or leave the country.

Reduction in COVID-related deaths

Erin Carlson, UTA associate clinical professor and director of graduate public health programs in the College of Nursing and Health Innovation, told the Dallas Observer that a divergence in COVID-related deaths and additional cases at a time when case numbers are soaring is not cause for celebration. “I take no comfort in the reduction of deaths; it’s still a very, very, very serious situation because of the nature of the disease,” she said. “So even though we’re seeing a reduction of deaths, that doesn’t mean we’re seeing a reduction in the number of people whose lives are forever changed by this virus.”
