New building approved

UTA received approval from the UT System Board of Regents for its design plans and funding of a new building that will house both the School of Social Work and the College of Nursing and Health Innovation’s SMART Hospital, the Fort Worth Business Press reported. The 150,000-square-foot facility is expected to cost $76 million, with construction beginning in 2021.

Holiday safety guidance

Erin Carlson, associate clinical professor and director of graduate public health programs in the UTA College of Nursing and Health Innovation, said families should rethink their holiday plans and warned that small gatherings could lead to big problems related to COVID-19, U.S. Fed News reported. Carlson also spoke to the Dallas Morning News about best practices for the upcoming holiday season.

Preparing for flood disasters

Nick Fang, UTA associate professor of civil engineering, told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram that Texas’ establishment of 15 regional groups to develop the state’s first-ever statewide flood plan is a significant demonstration of the state’s commitment to addressing the complexity of flooding issues following the devastating impact of Hurricane Harvey.

New, timely art

Five UTA student artists and two art professors created a colorful mural depicting individuals wearing masks in the basement of the Science & Engineering Innovation & Research building to capture the current unusual moment in history, U.S. Fed News reported.
