Clinical Associate Professor

Service Learning Course(s):

• NURS-4351, Nursing Leadership and Management

"Living in this world, you know we're all connected somehow and that we offer different ways of looking at things and I think the benefit is on all ends."

Dr. Maxine Adegbola has been teaching at UTA since 2008 and has remained in the nursing program. Her interest in service learning began when she wanted to strengthen civic engagement within the community of learners. In nursing, they are engaged with the community in general, but it would be important to encapsulate and include service learning more in their nursing courses.

Dr. Adegbola was able to expand on her original thought of service learning by being introduced to the fellows program. This program embraced her desire to seek more as a type of pedagogy and included their offerings in the College of Nursing. She enjoyed the diverse involvement as a part of the faculty fellows program and the different possibilities of project ideas. She also appreciated that other faculty members were taking various paths with service learning.

Dr. Adegbola supports the implementation of service learning because she notes that it prepares students for the real world and reveals the connection that we have with the community. She encourages faculty members to get involved with service learning for the benefit of being seen in the community within their discipline.

For faculty members who are hesitant about incorporating service learning into their courses, Dr. Adegbola suggests seeking out faculty fellows who have completed the program. This will provide an imaginative mindset and ideas for how to involve service learning effectively.
