Gentrification probed
Karabi Bezboruah, associate professor in the College of Architecture, Planning and Public Affairs, brought her expertise on community development to a KERA Facebook live forum titled "One Crisis Away” about West Dallas gentrification. Bezboruah has studied nearby Cadillac Heights and its struggle with redevelopment.
Amazon/Whole Foods deal
Roger Meiners, the UTA Goolsby-Rosenthal Endowed Chair of Economics and a professor of economics, wrote a question-and-answer column for The Conversation about Amazon’s purchase of Whole Foods. In the column, Meiners explains what Amazon and Whole Foods gain in the deal, as well as what other grocers might lose.
Detecting fake news
A UTA-led team is building computer tools to detect social bots on the Internet that create and spread fake news, Communications of the ACM reported. The ACM is the Association for Computing Machinery. Chengkai Li and Christoph Csaller, UTA associate professors in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, and Mark Tremayne, UTA assistant professor in the Department of Communication, and on the team.
Jordan economics
Lynn Malkawi, a UTA graduate, wrote an opinion piece for The Jordan Times about economic times in that country that cites reasons for optimism. Malkawi works in public service.
Alumnus honored
Commander Steve Macdonald was honored with the Defense Meritorious Service Medal for his accomplishments from May 2014 to June 2017 recently, PublicNow reported. Macdonald received his bachelor’s of journalism degree from UTA.
Nursing award
Lori Hanke received Northwest’s Clinical Excellence Surgical Services award, the Amarillo Globe-News reported. She is a graduate of UTA.
Father, son march
Charles Hermes, a UTA assistant professor of philosophy, was one of hundreds who attended a march honoring the memory of Jordan Edwards, a black teen fatally shot by a police officer in Balch Springs on April 29, the Star-Telegram reported. Hermes joined his son, Seth Cain, to march. Hermes emphasized the importance of understanding the levels of the criminal justice system and inalienable rights granted everyone.
