UTA national powerhouse

Like the city itself, UTA has shed many stereotypes to become a national powerhouse, according to a Dallas Fort-Worth Real Estate Review of how Arlington has changed over the last 60 years. Arlington City Manager Trey Yelverton called UTA the largest economic generator in the city with an annual impact of $1.3 billion. “You need that brainpower developing,” Yelverton said. “What they put into the economy is significant, and we have to work hard to keep it strong.” The Real Estate Council and the Dallas Regional Chamber published the review.

Engineering praise

Study International published an article, “5 reasons to choose UTA for your degree in Engineering,” which highly praised UTA’s College of Engineering and UTA as a low-cost, well-located, top-quality research, diverse and growing institution. Study International connects students with a global network of universities.

Institute lauded

An article in D Magazine complimented the work of the Institute of Urban Studies in the College of Architecture, Planning and Public Affairs. The story says UTA has become a center for the region’s best thinking about public transit and affordable housing thanks in large part to the work of the institute under director Shima Hamidi.

Fair housing assessment

UTA researchers continue to collaborate with the City of Dallas on the Fair Housing Assessment, despite regulatory turmoil in Washington D.C., Myriam Igoufe, UTA doctoral student in urban planning and public policy, told D Magazine. Her team hopes to be able to present much of its work by June.

UTA discoveries

UTA’s partnership with the Botanic Research Institute of Texas was mentioned in a Dallas Innovates story about discoveries and new research in North Texas. The compilation of discoveries also mentioned a new vehicle lubricant that researchers in UTA's Tribology, Lubrication, and Coating Laboratory and ESL TEKnologies discovered.

Golf course renamed

UTA was mentioned in an NBCDFW.com article on the renaming of Arlington's Chester W. Ditto Golf Course to the Texas Rangers Golf Club, which would make the team the first in Major League Baseball to have a co-branded golf course. The City of Arlington had previously called together the Rangers, Arlington Convention and Visitors Bureau and UTA to work with Colligan Golf Design to redevelop the course into a "destination golf course that could be one of the best golf courses in North Texas."

Possible candidates

Allan Saxe, UTA associate professor of political science, examined the rumors that Oprah Winfrey may consider running for President for CW33.com. "Oprah's a billionaire. Donald Trump's a billionaire. She's got a huge ego. He has a big ego. Let 'er rip!" said Saxe.

Mobile device impact

The New York Post, Government Executive, Morningstar, Guy Counseling and Moneyish featured a story about a UTA study that finds that using a mobile device at home during family time can negatively impact family and work lives of both spouses. Wayne Crawford, assistant professor of management in UTA’s College of Business, was one of five authors on “Your Job Is Messing With Mine! The Impact of Mobile Device Use for Work During Family Time on the Spouse’s Work Life,” recently published in the Journal of Occupational Health Psychology. The story received international coverage from HRKatha and Riautrust in Indonesia. 

Basketball players honor friend

A WFAA ABC 8 story featured UTA men’s basketball guard Kaelon Wilson and redshirt freshman Edric Dennis. Wilson wears the No. 5 jersey to pay tribute to a friend and fellow basketball player who died when they were teenagers. Dennis will continue the tradition after Wilson graduates, donning the number next season.

Textbooks decision

UTA senior Ursula Abdala was featured in an EdSurge article about how students choose which textbooks to buy for college courses. “I try to read the vibe of the teacher and see how it’s going to be,” Abdala said. “If I feel that one book will save my life this semester, I’ll break down and buy it,” she says. “I’m usually broke.”

College fair

UTA participated in an alumni college fair that provided college information to current students, KTRE ABC 9 in Pollock, Texas, and Waco's KXXV ABC 25 reported. High school junior Kayce Helton, who is planning to attend UTA appreciates hearing from former students. "It's interesting because everyone has a different experience,” Helton said.

Alumnus promoted

UTA alumnus Hamad M. Hamad has been promoted to principal in Dallas-based law firm Caldwell Cassady & Curry, PR Newswire and other media reported. Hamad has been honored as one of the state's top young lawyers since 2015 on the Texas Super Lawyers Rising Stars list by Thomson Reuters. He earned his undergraduate degree in biology, summa cum laude, at UTA.
