UTA lauded
UTA is continuing its legacy of setting milestones of achievement across the broad spectrum of higher education, a Star-Telegram op-ed column by Richard Greene said. The column praised the University’s outcomes in terms of preparing graduates for successful careers. Greene is a former Arlington mayor and an adjunct professor in the College of Architecture, Planning and Public Affairs.
Coral research
UTA researchers have found a correlation between a strong immune response in diseased corals and a lower expression of genes associated with growth and reproduction, Technology Networks reported. Laura Mydlarz, UTA associate professor and associate chair of biology, led the research, which was published this month in the Royal Society Open Science journal.
Space gaps
Bernd Chudoba, UTA aerospace engineering professor, has received a $250,000 grant from the Air Force Research Laboratory to develop a toolbox that planners can use to identify science and technology gaps related to space transportation issues, Techsite and Phys.org reported. The grant also would identify and rank emerging technologies that the United States needs to address.
Healing hearts
Juhyun Lee, an assistant professor in UTA’s Bioengineering Department, has been awarded a prestigious Career Development Award by the American Heart Association to determine how genes might be used to heal heart tissue, Techsite reported.
Sexual harassment
Texas lawmakers have recognized the need to establish and enforce policies against sexual harassment, but they have yet to reveal penalties for violators, The Dallas Morning News reported. The article quoted a recent report by M. Ann McFadyen and James Campbell Quick, two UTA management professors, that surveyed sexual harassment in the workplace. The report said the business world has a long way to go in addressing those concerns.

The Special Olympics Texas Summer Games is making its way to UTA this week, KBTX CBS 3 in Bryan and KRLD 1080 AM reported.
Alumna wins runoff
Lupe Valdez, former Dallas County sheriff, made history in Tuesday’s runoff elections by becoming the first Latina and the first openly gay person to win a major party’s nomination for governor in Texas, The New York Times reported. Valdez earned her master’s degree in criminology from UTA.
Cancer trap
UTA bioengineer Liping Tang has invented an implantable medical device that attracts and kills circulating cancer cells, Prostate Cancer News Today reported. UTA has patented the device in Europe.
UTA 23rd largest employer
UTA is the DFW area’s 23rd largest employer, DestinationDFW reported.
Scholarship winner
Umesh Bhandari, a UTA student, received the Scholarship America 2017 Dream Award, Great American Financial Resources reported. Scholarship America is the nation's largest nonprofit, private-sector scholarship and education support organization.
