Major gift to grow gerontology program

UTA’s College of Nursing and Health Innovation received a transformational $4.7 million gift from the Deerbrook Charitable Trust to further develop its adult gerontology graduate programs, the Fort Worth Business Press reported. The trust’s gift will fund scholarships, create an endowed faculty position and grow all gerontology-focused graduate nursing programs.

Hypersonic speed technology

The UTA Aerodynamics Research Center and the Office of Naval Research have brought a new arc-heated, hypersonic wind tunnel online, marking a new era in the University’s long history of aerodynamics innovation and discovery, Defense R&D Outlook reported. The ONR-UTA Arc-Heated Wind Tunnel is the only one of its kind at a U.S. university. The technology is part of a larger effort by the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency for national research on hypersonic speed.

Library developing makerspace curriculums

UTA Libraries along with the University of Massachusetts–Amherst and the University of Nevada–Reno were jointly awarded a three-year, $241,845 National Leadership Project Grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the Library Journal reported. The grant will support faculty training to incorporate makerspaces and technologies into university curriculums and improve learning outcome assessments.

Texas Rangers Golf Club new home for UTA

Texas Rangers Golf Club will become the new home of UTA's men's and women's golf programs, The Dallas Morning News reported. The course is part of a $24 million project that includes a renovation and new routing of the former Chester W. Ditto Golf Course by UTA alumni John Colligan and Trey Kemp of Colligan Golf Design.

Former coach heads to Basketball Hall of Fame

Samantha Morrow, former UTA women’s basketball coach, will be inducted into the Texas High School Basketball Hall of Fame, the Weatherford Democrat and Cleburne Times reported. Morrow spent six seasons at UTA, beginning in the 2007-08 season. Her 2009 team earned a first-place division finish in conference play and made a WNIT appearance after playing in the championship game of the conference tournament. She also guided her teams to three conference tournament appearances in her first five seasons. Prior to UTA, Morrow led Mansfield High School to four consecutive Class 5A state championships from 1999 to 2002.
