COVID-19 mental health impact

Godfred O. Boateng, an assistant professor in the Department of Kinesiology at The University of Texas at Arlington, conducted a study of the mental health outcomes associated with the COVID-19 pandemic in sub-Saharan Africa, NewsRx COVID-19 Daily reported. Boateng’s research found an increase in the symptoms of boredom and anxiety and a decrease in psychological well-being among participants.

Cognitive flow

Cesar Torres, an assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at The University of Texas at Arlington, received a grant of approximately $175,000 from the National Science Foundation to use machine learning and artificial intelligence techniques to identify when a person is falling out of cognitive flow and introduce an intervention to regain it, U.S. Fed News reported.

Better design for aerospace engines

In partnership with the Office of Naval Research and Rolls Royce, Daejong Kim, associate professor of mechanical engineering at The University of Texas at Arlington, is developing foil bearings that do not require oil for use in small aerospace engines, U.S. Fed News and Targeted News Service reported.

Paralympic potential

Kasey Nickel, a sophomore at The University of Texas at Arlington, is one step away from qualifying for the 2021 Tokyo Paralympic games, KWCH 12 reported. Nickel, a competitor in adaptive track, is ranked among the top 10 athletes in the world for shotput and discus in her age group.
