UTA grad elected to city council

Junior Ezeonu, a graduate of the Department of Political Science at The University of Texas at Arlington, was elected to Grand Prairie’s city council as one of its youngest-ever members at age 22, The Dallas Morning News reported. Ezeonu’s campaign focused on improving the city’s infrastructure, enabling equity of resources and providing quality education for children.

Protecting Galveston Bay

Michelle Hummel, assistant professor of civil engineering at The University of Texas at Arlington, spoke to Salon about the Texas legislature’s approval of a proposal to build a coastal barrier that will protect Houston from storm surges and rising sea levels.

Racial segregation and heart disease

Yeonwoo Kim, assistant professor of kinesiology in the College of Nursing and Health Innovation, is investigating how community-level factors like racial segregation and income impact cardiovascular health in minority populations, Mirage News reported.

Table-top sanitizer dispenser

An alumnus of the Department of Psychology at The University of Texas at Arlington partnered with UTA engineering students to improve the design for a table-mounted sanitizer dispenser, U.S. Fed News reported. Austin Harvey and other students in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering assisted inventor Mel Jackson by making the device more compact and inserting a sensor that triggers the machine to dispense automatically.

Hospice care shortage

The College of Nursing and Health Innovation has partnered with SilverStone Hospice in Dallas to recruit nurses into the field of hospice care, Hospice News reported. Hospice, a small sector of nursing, has experienced severe staffing shortages due to the pandemic. In a recent survey, more than 35% of hospice leaders cite staffing as a primary concern.
