In memoriam

In a Texas Highways story about how the town of Hemphill, Texas, is observing the 20th anniversary of the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster, the husband of astronaut Kalpana Chawla (’84 MS, Aerospace Engineering) shared the ways that he has honored his wife’s legacy. In addition to making donations to the Hemphill museum, Chawla’s husband, Jean-Pierre Harrison, has written a biography of Chawla and mentored women who see her as a role model.

Glucose data

Liao Yue, assistant professor of kinesiology, spoke to ScienceLine about how people with Type 1 diabetes use continuous glucose monitors to monitor their blood sugar. Yue said that personal glucose data empowers people to have more control of their bodies.

Healthy Arlington

Meghna Tare, UTA’s chief sustainability officer, and UTA’s Institute of Urban Studies are partnering with the city of Arlington to launch the Healthy Connections: A Healthy Arlington initiative, the city of Arlington reported. The project will be funded by a $50,000 award granted by the U.S. Conference of Mayors and the American Beverage Foundation for a Healthy America.

On-demand transportation

Arlington RAPID, the on-demand, self-driving public transportation service operated by the city of Arlington in partnership with UTA, Via and May Mobility, is rolling out a fleet of more spacious, accessible vehicles to take passengers around downtown and UTA’s campus, the city of Arlington reported. The service has provided more than 31,000 on-demand rides since its launch in March 2021.

Crisis management

In a blog post for the Journal of Management Studies, Liliana Pérez-Nordtvedt, professor of strategic management, wrote about best practices for decision making when companies encounter crises. People who are prone to react prematurely are less effective crisis managers, Nordtvedt said, but there are ways to counteract one's instinct to act too quickly.
