What Do Computer Scientists Do?

Computer scientists explore fundamental issues in computing and develop theories and models to invent and design new approaches to computing technology and find innovative uses for existing technology.

 

Bachelor of Science in Computer Science

Students in the B.S. in Computer Science program will gain fundamental knowledge and practical skills in the design of computer-based systems, as well as demonstrating leadership for a changing profession and world. They will also apply the knowledge and skills gained in the classroom in real-world settings through internships or co-ops and course projects, including the capstone project.

The 123-hour curriculum leads to a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science. Transfer students may receive credit for courses listed in the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board's Field of Study Curriculum.

Degree Options

  • B.S. in Computer Science, on-campus
    • Choice of five technical electives, including at least one of compilers, computer graphics, or robotics.
    • Choice of one of three security courses, others available as technical electives.
  • Fast Track B.S. to M.S. program in Computer Science - Three shared courses between the B.S. and M.S. programs allows students to complete a master's degree with just 21 additional hours.
  • B.S. to Ph.D. track in Computer Science - requires 30 credit hours with 21 hours of diagnostic requirements and nine hours of advanced research-oriented coursework, in addition to the Ph.D. requirements.

The program in computer science is accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission (CAC) of ABET (https://www.abet.org), under the General Criteria and the Computer Science Program Criteria.

All discipline specific programs in the College of Engineering meet educational requirements for professional licensure or certification in all U.S. states, territories, and the District of Columbia.
