The Ministry of Cultures, Arts and Heritage in Chile recently honored a University of Texas at Arlington School Social Work professor on her outstanding research and publication of a guide to help adults in that country identify and respond to child sexual abuse.

Catherine LaBrenz

Dr. Catherine LaBrenz and two peers, Alejandra Santana Lopez, and Luz Cabrera Piñones, wrote and published “La Superniña de las Mariposas” last year.

The book offers Chilean workers who interact with children a resource to approach a topic often considered taboo, of child sexual abuse. It provides tools for adults to have conversations about consent and informs them how to appropriately respond to disclosures of child sexual abuse.

The Minsterio de las Culturas, las Artes y el Patrimonio presented three authors with a national award and announced their book would be distributed to libraries across the state.
