Testing in Engineering Online

Testing Options

  1. On-campus with the in-class section: request permission directly from your instructor and DO NOT submit a testing form
  2. Off-campus testing center: MUST SUBMIT Testing Center Approval Request form
  3. Public testing companies, universities, community colleges, and library testing centers are acceptable if proctors are present for the entirety of the exam (see “Acceptable Proctors” below)

*Please Note: The UTA Testing Center is no longer available to proctor exams for online students.

Testing Center Approval Request Form

The Testing Center Approval Request form needs to be completed once per semester.

  • This is your communication to your instructor/s of your planned testing location so they can send your exams to the appropriate testing center.
  • The Testing Center Approval Request form is automatically submitted to the Engineering Online office when you click “Submit”.
  • Engineering Online will review, approve, and send the completed form to your instructor. You will receive an email when it is approved.
  • After your testing form is approved, it is your responsibility to inform your instructor of your test date and time.

Student's Step-by-Step Instructions for Registering and Taking an Exam

  1. Locate an approved testing center (see “Proctoring” below).
  2. Communicate with the testing center to be sure they will proctor/administer your exam and can accommodate you on the date you require.
  3. Submit the Testing Center Approval Request form. Without this form, the instructor cannot make your test available to the center.
  4. Wait to receive an approval email from the Engineering Online office.
  5. As soon as possible, but no less than 48-72 hours before the exam time, reserve your seat directly with your approved testing center (not Engineering Online). Be sure to check the testing center requirements since some may require up to 14 days' notice to schedule an appointment. Without this appointment, the testing center will turn you away on test day.
  6. Pay any testing center fees. Fees are the student's responsibility.
  7. Email your instructor your pre-booked testing date and time.

Upon completion of these steps, you are ready to sit your exam.

If you need to change your testing center during the semester, submit a new form.

Students Located Outside of the United States

  • Locate a testing center which also tests for professional exams such as the GRE and GMAT exams and follow the step-by-step instructions above.

Proctoring

What is a proctor and why do I need one?

  • A proctor is a person who monitors students for the entirety of their exam.
  • To ensure the integrity of the assessment process it is the responsibility of the proctor to see that students follow an instructor's guidelines for each exam.
  • Proctors must be unbiased individuals who, in general, have no personal association or affiliation with the student(s) they proctor.
  • No company employee (managers, co-workers, etc.) is allowed to act as a proctor.
  • Proctoring in a private residence or setting is NOT permissible.

I've never had a proctor before. Where should I start?

  • National College Testing Association is an association of testing centers that wish to have their services listed for students needing proctoring services.
  • If you cannot locate an acceptable testing location using the link above, look at "Acceptable Proctors" below and locate an organization that meets our criteria.
  • Once you have located a suitable proctor, fill out and submit the Testing Center Approval Request form.

Acceptable Proctors

  • Testing Centers affiliated with the National Testing Association (NCTA)
  • Testing Centers located at accredited post-secondary colleges/community colleges or universities - including but not limited to those listed on NCTA (*those listed on NCTA are not the only testing centers available. Many schools not listed offer testing services).
  • Certified librarians currently employed in public or private libraries, colleges, and universities
  • Professional learning or tutoring centers
  • Educational officers of a corporation or military branch
  • Please note: the UTA Testing Center no longer proctors exams for online students

Unacceptable Proctors

  • Relatives or spouses/partners/significant others
  • Friends and/or roommates
  • Co-workers, supervisors or business associates
  • Peers
  • Undergraduate students
  • Athletic coaches
  • Anyone who does not have a professional email address (Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo, etc. are unacceptable)
  • Anyone who cannot provide a computer with internet access for up to 2 or 3 hours
  • Anyone who cannot monitor the student for the entirety of the exam

At what places am I allowed to take my exams?

  • Testing centers or libraries.
  • Exams MUST be taken at the center or library business location.
  • Proctoring in a private residence or setting is NOT permissible.

Do proctors charge for their services?

  • Students should check with the testing center or proctor about any charges levied.
  • Any charges are the responsibility of the student.

Are there any technical requirements needed by proctors?

  • Proctors must have access to the Internet.
  • Proctors should have an official business email account (not free email accounts like Hotmail, Gmail, yahoo, etc.).
  • The proctor should also have access to a printer and scanner.

Can I use a proctor that was previously used?

  • Yes, you may use a previous proctor. Be sure to check with the proctor to be certain they are still willing to proctor for you.
  • If so, fill out and submit the Testing Center Approval Request form.

May I change proctors?

  • Yes, please fill out and submit a new Testing Center Approval Request form.
