Mavs in the Metro: Arlington
Are you looking for a summer internship? Do you want to give back to your community? Are you interested in becoming an engaged citizen in the metro region? If “yes,” then you should apply for Mavs in the Metro (MiM).
What is Mavs in the Metro?
MiM is a UTA summer program in which students earn 3-9 credits while engaged in a part-time internship (approximately 20 hrs/wk) with the City of Arlington, gain valuable experience volunteering for a local non-profit (approximately 10 hrs/wk), and explore the points of pride and social challenges of our local community.
Where will selected students work?
For their internship, students will be placed in a City of Arlington Department gaining professional experience that will make them more career ready upon graduation. Many students do not recognize the complexity involved in making a city the size of Arlington operate. From marketing to human resources to art preservation to landscape design… cities do more than most people realize. The City will be looking for students from all majors to assist them in making Arlington the best place possible for its citizens.
Students will also get to more deeply explore the important roles that non-profit organizations play in advancing the social welfare of our inhabitants. In conjunction with UTA and the City, students will have the opportunity to select a non-profit to volunteer with. This experience will not only provide professional experience, but also help students to more deeply engage with the social conditions that provide positive change for those most in need.
What courses will students take?
Depending upon students’ degree plans, students will enroll in a 1 - 6 credit internship course, a 1 - 3 credit service-learning course, and a 1 - 3 credit special topics course. The number of credits will vary based upon students’ degree plans and course needs.
What majors are accepted?
Mavs in the Metro is looking for students of all majors and skill sets. From highly technical data analysis to general office work, we are looking for students who want to contribute to making Arlington a great place to live.
