Justin Hawthorne

Justin Sheffield

Justin Hawthorne knows what he wants, and the Master of Software Engineering program at UTA’s Fort Worth Campus opened the door to turning his goals into a reality.

Hawthorne, who earned his bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering at UTA, is a software engineer with Lockheed Martin’s Aeronautics SkunkWorks in Fort Worth, where he designs software for backend use on unmanned aerial vehicles. He began his career at Lockheed Martin five years ago as an aeronautical engineer designing structure modifications for the inner wing of the F-35, then transitioned to a system engineering role for the F-22 program, where he has 72 flight hours from working in the simulator labs. In his third year, he wanted to transition to a software engineer role because it offered greater flexibility, earning potential and career growth, but he needed to go back to school to make the transition.

“UTA’s program was fast-paced and close to work. It really fit my needs and schedule. Also, it is one of the few that did not require me to have a software engineering background for admission. My professors were excellent and being able to attend classes in person and virtually truly helped. This program opened the door to my current position, and for that I am extremely grateful,” Hawthorne said.

The 30-credit hour accelerated program can be completed in 16 months and features hybrid, 8-week courses that generally meet once in person and once online per week. This flexibility and short length to completion is helpful for working professionals who have busy personal and professional lives.
