Writing a Cover Letter

Cover letters often accompany résumés, and trends show that employers are increasingly reading cover letters, even when they are not required. A well-written, tailored cover letter can help your application stand out by showing genuine interest in the company, clarifying gaps or other career changes, highlighting unique experiences or skills not listed on your résumé and allowing the employer to see a more personal side not always conveyed on a résumé alone.

A puzzle with some missing pieces. The words, "Cover Letter" are in the space where the missing pieces should be.

Crafting Impactful Cover Letters

  • Your contact information (name, phone number, and email address)
  • Date
  • Employer's contact information (Name of hiring manager if known, company name, and address)
  • Use a professional greeting, such as, "Dear (hiring manager's name)" or "Dear Hiring Manager" if you don't have a name.
  • State the reason for the letter.
