Work Culture in the United States
Understanding American work culture is your first step to success in gaining employment in the United States. Some work culture aspects to anticipate:
- Americans believe in initiative. If you see something that needs to be done, speak up. Taking ownership is encouraged and valued.
- Honest and collaborative communication is welcomed. Ideas are shared openly. Being polite is still important.
- Americans like to be productive and want to see results from their efforts. The workplace is competitive; promotions are often offered to results-driven employees.
- Americans tend to work longer hours during the week and have less personal time off than most countries.
- Punctuality is expected. Employers assume you will be punctual for your work start time and return from breaks at the appropriate time. Planning to be on time for meetings and meeting deadlines is crucial.
- Familiarize yourself with the résumé and interview process in the U.S. Learn to network by attending recruiting events and student organization meetings. If English is your second language, practice by speaking it often and with your friends. Simple activities like reading out loud can help to improve your English skills.
- Most workplaces require a certain level of professional dress. Some enforce dress codes. A collared shirt and dress pants in a business casual work environment would be typical of most workplaces. Some may require more formal attire like a suit and tie.
