OPT Categories Simplified

The information here is for enrolled International Students on F-1 visas.

Pre-Completion OPT

Pre Completion OPT is work authorization given by USCIS used in limited circumstances for students whose department's do not offer CPT who have coursework remaining. Pre completion OPT is limited to part-time (20 hours per week or less) during the fall and spring semesters and may be full-time (more than 20 hours per week) during non-required summer sessions or other official university breaks. For more information, click the button below:

Post-Completion OPT

Post Completion OPT is work authorization given by USCIS for students who have completed or will complete their coursework requirements and would like to gain experience in their chosen field of study. Post Completion OPT is applied for in a student's final semester. For more information, click the button below:

STEM OPT

24 month OPT STEM Extension is available to students who are currently on 12 month OPT and have completed a degree in a STEM Field. USCIS must receive your application BEFORE the end date of your 12 month OPT period. For more information, click the button below:
