Employment for F-1 status holders is extremely limited. All F-1 employment can be categorized as either On-Campus or Off-Campus Employment. To be eligible for any F-1 employment authorization, students must maintain valid F-1 status.

Employment Categories

  • Limited to 20 hours per week during required semesters.
  • No upper limit during school holidays or summer semester (unless summer is first or last semester).

  • On-campus employment must end with the completion of the program.

  • On-campus employment does not have to be reported to OIE, but students without a Social Security Number will need to submit the On Campus Employment Verification form.

Social Security

CPT (Curricular Practical Training) is defined to be alternative work/study, internship, cooperative education, or any other type of required internship or practicum that is offered by sponsoring employers through cooperative agreements with the school. CPT

OPT (Optional Practical Training) allows a student to engage in temporary employment to gain practical experience in his or her field of study. OPT requires approval from USCIS. For more information about the various types of OPT please see appropriate link below:
