Health Insurance Requirements

The University of Texas Board of Regents has passed Regents Rule 50402, which now requires only F1, F2, J1, J2 students, who are currently enrolled at UT Schools to have medical insurance compliant with the federal Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA). The UT- Student Health Insurance Plan (UT-SHIP) meets these requirements.

Summer 2024 (Student starting in Summer 2024 ONLY)

Summer Insurance will be $864.00.Coverage period begins May 15th, 2024, through August 14th, 2024. 

**Summer AES Fee: $16

Fall 2024

Fall insurance will be $1,306.00. Effective coverage begins August 15th, 2024, until December 31st, 2024.

**Fall AES Fee: $96

New Students

Students are automatically enrolled in the UT-SHIP at the time of registration, and the cost of the policy is included in the student's tuition and fee bill via MyMav account. Information Sessions and additional information are provided during Fall and Spring Orientations.

More Information

International Students automatically enrolled into the UT SHIP may also purchase dental or dependent insurance. Dental and Dependent Coverage will need to match the coverage period of the UT Student Health Insurance Plan. Students interested in adding Dental coverage or medical insurance for their dependents will need to enroll within 30 days of the start of every coverage period.

*Dependent enrollment exceptions are made for newborn or adopted children, or for dependents who become eligible for coverage as a result of a qualifying life event.

The UT System has established criteria in which an international student can request a waiver from the UT-SHIP by providing proof of alternative insurance coverage. In order to be approved a waiver, your alternative insurance coverage must meet or exceed the requirements as set in the UT System regulation and be PPACA compliant.

Waivers must be submitted online and approved each semester to have the insurance charge removed from your student account.

Criteria to submit a waiver request, must meet one of the following:

  1. Sponsored Plan (US Government, Foreign Government, Embassy)
    a. Must guarantee payment of all health care expenses in writing
    b. Must be ACA compliant
  2. UT Employee Group Health Plan (must be ACA compliant)
  3. US Employer Plan (must be ACA compliant)
  4. US Individual Plan (must be ACA compliant)
  5. Enrolled exclusively in distance learning programs

If you meet one of the above criteria, then your alternative health insurance coverage must meet the following minimum requirements:

  1. The mandatory coverage period of May 15th, 2024, through August 14th, 2024.
  2. Unlimited maximum on benefits (Provides the Essential Minimum Benefits with no annual limits)
  3. Contains no exclusions for pre-existing conditions.
  4. Deductible that does not exceed $500 per condition (accident or illness)
  5. Covers 100% of Preventative Care as defined by the PPACA
  6. Imposes no provisions for co-insurance that exceed 25% of the covered benefits per accident or illness.
  7. Must be Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) compliant. *These requirements are non-negotiable.
  8. Short Term Limited Duration Plans or other health plans created expressly for the purpose of providing coverage to international students and/or non-immigrant visa holders do not meet the requirements for Health Care Coverage described.

Deadline to submit waiver: June14th, 2024.

 

If you have an alternative health insurance plan and you meet the waiver eligibility criteria, please follow these instructions to apply for the waiver of the AHP University SHIP.

**Waivers are due EVERY SEMESTER.

  1. Once you have registered for your courses and updated your physical address, your information will be sent to Academic Health Plan (AHP) to generate an email to be sent to your UTA email address, stating that you are eligible to submit a waiver to waive the health insurance.
  2. Please check your email and following the instructions on how to submit the health insurance waiver.
  3. Have an electronic copy of your insurance card, policy benefits summary, and proof of medical and evacuation coverage (if you have this coverage) available.

The Office of International Education will be notified if a student's waiver is approved and will remove the charges from student's MyMav Account. Late waivers will NOT be accepted.

Note: It is the student's responsibility to follow up with the OIE if charges are not removed by the end of the waiver period. Extensions to the waiver period will be denied.

An international student granted an insurance waiver that does not include the Evacuation and Repatriation coverage will be automatically enrolled in this coverage and the premium cost placed on the student's account for that semester.

Evacuation and Repatriation Coverage is included in the UT Student Health Insurance Plan.

New Student Checklist

1. Register and attend International Orientation

2. The International Insurance hold is removed AFTER successful completion of the New Maverick Pre-Orientation Modules.

3. Auto-Enrolled into UT Ship Insurance after class registration.

4. Complete the Insurance Waiver before deadline (Each Semester), if applicable.
