Remote Work

At UTA, we recognize that flexible work arrangements can help employees balance their responsibilities while supporting the needs of the University. Remote work is a privilege that depends on the type of job, performance, and approval from leadership. This page provides a simple guide for both staff and faculty on eligibility, as well as how to request, set up, and maintain a Remote Work Agreement (RWA). Student employees are not eligible for remote work.

Staff Eligibility

Remote work is considered to be an approve work schedule which includes working at a non-UTA site on a consistent regular basis, either on a fully remote or hybrid remote basis.

Remote work may be considered for a staff member if they meet the following requirements:

  • Employed in a position that does not require the staff member’s day-to-day physical presence at the University or in-person interaction with student, administration of other employees.
  • Has a demonstrated ability to work well with minimal supervision.
  • Has a thorough knowledge and understanding of the job tasks and operations for which they are responsible.
  • Has a history of reliable and responsible accomplishment of work duties.
  • Has demonstrated ability to establish priorities and manage his/her time.
  • Has the ability to meet all necessary components of the RWA

Faculty Eligibility

Faculty typically teach, conduct research, and provide service using a mix of on-campus, home, and other locations. These customary practices do not require a Remote Work Agreement (RWA). An RWA is only needed when a faculty member and their leadership agree that duties will be performed exclusively from a designated off-campus location for a set period of time.

Remote work may be considered for a faculty member if they meet the following requirements:

  • The position is considered suitable for remote work, such that if some or most of its responsibilities can be performed away from the regular campus work location, without negatively impact job performance.
  • Their work load does not require the faculty member’s day-to-day physical presence at the University or in-person interaction with student, administration of other employees.
  • Has the ability to meet all necessary components of the RWA.

Definitions & Decision-Making Authority

  • Remote work allows an employee to work specific days (per week, month, or during seasonal periods) at a location that is not their regularly assigned place of employment.

Types of flexible work location arrangements include:

    • Remote Hybrid – Employee is authorized to perform their regular job duties from both an on-site and approved off-site location.
    • Remote Full – Employee is authorized to perform their regular job duties from an approved remote work location.
  • Employees working from a remote work location may be required to come to their assigned work location or other University location for events, meetings, and other
commitments, and should be available promptly during regular work hours, when needed. Employees may also be required to reside in the area where the work is to be performed.
  • Remote work outside the state of Texas is strongly discouraged and requires approval from the VP of TCE, and for faculty also requires approval from the Provost.

A Remote Work Agreement must be completed for any remote work. RWAs must be renewed annually and are not considered permanent. RWAs may end at any time for any reason, including performance concerns, organizational needs, or team structural changes.

Deans, Vice Presidents, and Chiefs must approve all remote work. They have the ability to delegate signatory authority to an associate or assistant Vice President or Dean in all cases except those outside of the state of Texas.

Remote work outside of Texas is very rarely approved and requires permission from the VP of TCE and campus president for staff or provost for faculty.
