Notes from Kanchan
I worked as a software developer intern at Capital One, where I was along with four of my teammates from UTA. We were assigned a challenge project to build a web application to search and list all open-source software (OSS) utilized across various teams within in 3 weeks.
How did you get this internship opportunity?
UTA College of Engineering makes students aware of available opportunities and internships. I also came across an email from COE to apply for the Breakthrough Tech Program, through which I was able to secure my spot in Capital One.
What are you most proud of/what have you accomplished as an intern?
I'm very proud of securing this internship during my freshman year and being able to contribute to such a large financial tech company.
What are/was the most valuable thing you learned?
The most valuable thing I learned during my internship was the incredible power of teamwork and effective collaboration. Our challenge project, with three-week deadline, was a perfect example of this. Despite the tight deadline, we successfully completed the project, demonstrating how teamwork and collaboration can achieve greater outcomes.
In what way(s) has this experience impacted you the most?
This internship has significantly boosted my confidence. As a freshman, I was able to contribute to a project for such a large company, which has motivated me to keep learning and growing. The experience has shaped how I see my future career and helped me grow both professionally and personally.

Any advice for students looking for an internship?
Develop relevant skills, build projects, tailor your resume, connect with professionals, prepare common interview questions, and apply early. Don’t miss out on applying through every available platform. One arrow will hit the target if you keep shooting.
How have you applied what you learned in the college of engineering and how you’ve applied these skills in your career.
At the College of Engineering, I learned core programming concepts and fundamentals, which I applied to my internship. Group projects prepared me for teamwork. Juggling multiple courses and assignments taught me time management. Additionally, the presentations I gave in classes and research enhanced my ability to communicate technical ideas clearly, allowing me to effectively present our project results at the end of the internship.
How would an internship help you reach your career goals?
My short-term career goal is to gain more internships. Many companies use internships as a pipeline for full-time hiring, so these experiences are crucial for me. My recent internship at Capital One introduced me to experienced engineers, recruiters, and other interns, which will be invaluable for future opportunities. Additionally, it has boosted my confidence in both my technical and soft skills, which will be essential for my career success.
