Understanding AI Tools and their Value in Education
What is ChatGPT?
"ChatGPT is a conversational language model developed by OpenAI. It is based on the GPT (Generative Pre-training Transformer) architecture and is trained on a large dataset of text from the internet. ChatGPT is designed to generate human-like text in response to a given prompt, and can be fine-tuned for specific tasks such as question answering, language translation, and text summarization. It can also be used to generate creative writing, such as stories and poetry. Overall, ChatGPT is a powerful tool that can help with natural language understanding and generation tasks."
- (ChatGPT's response to the following statement: Define ChatGPT)
Since November 30th, 2022, when ChatGPT (Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer) first became publicly available, numerous articles and media coverage on its values and concerns have been filling out inboxes, news notifications on our phones, and even casual conversation with our family, friends, and colleagues. These publications come from various sources ranging from major publications such as, The New York Times, The Atlantic, and MIT Technology Review, to more education-focused sources such as Inside Higher Ed and The Chronicle of Higher Education.
Although some are taking drastic measures, such as banning ChatGPT from school districts, technology such as ChatGPT will continue to evolve and it is up to us, as educators, to find value in what these tools have to offer and continue the conversation of how we can best utilize these technological advancements to better support our students.
