CREDIT BY EXAMINATION
The Avant STAMP Exam will be used to grant credit by examination in Arabic, ASL, Chinese, French,
German, Korean, Russian, and Spanish up to the intermediate level II (2314).
Our testing team will contact you with further instructions after you submit your form.
Students should allow at least three (3) hours to complete the Avant STAMP Exam.
The fee to take the Avant STAMP Exam is $60. Note that there will be an academic administration
testing service fee of $25 for each course level you wish to apply to your transcript

Department of Modern Languages major, minor, and certificate students – Credit by Exam,
Letter Grade Required
Students admitted to UTA before the fall/spring semesters begin must take the Avant STAMP
Exam before the first day of classes. For late registration, students must take the Avant STAMP
Exam no later than the second day of classes to allow sufficient time for scores to post and to
enroll in the appropriate course in the sequence according to major, minor, or certificate
program requirements. There are no retakes for the Avant STAMP Exam.
The credits received through the Avant STAMP Exam will only be applied to UTA transcripts if
the following conditions are met: 1) the examinee enrolls in the next appropriate language
course in the sequence at UTA and remains enrolled in the course past Census Day, and 2) the
administration fee is paid before the last semester prior to graduation.
Students outside the Department of Modern Languages
Students outside of the department taking the Avant STAMP Exam to fulfill a language
requirement must take the exam before the end of their Junior year to allow enough time to
take any future courses that may be needed to satisfy a language requirement and/or to have
their credits posted in time for graduation application reviews. The Avant STAMP Exam will not
be administered to Seniors in their last semester at UTA for the purpose of receiving course
credit.
- Credit by Exam (No Letter Grade)
The credits received through the Avant STAMP Exam will only be applied to UTA transcripts
if the administration fee is paid before the last semester prior to graduation.
- Credit by Exam and Letter Grade
The credits received through the Avant STAMP Exam with a letter grade will only be applied
to UTA transcripts if the following conditions are met: 1) the examinee enrolls in the next
appropriate language course in the sequence at UTA and remains enrolled in the course
past Census Day, and 2) the administration fee is paid before the last semester prior to
graduation.
Grading Rubric
To test out of a particular course level, students must score within the range indicated
below (or higher) on the composite score:
- For second language learners of Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Korean, Russian, and Spanish,
the composite score is the average of four parts (reading, writing, listening, speaking).
- For heritage learners of Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Korean, Russian, and Spanish,
the composite score is the average of two parts (reading and writing), although students must take
all four parts of the test and have the average score of all four parts no lower
than the average of their reading and writing. In case it is lower, the composite score
of four parts will be usedto determine the course level. .
- For ASL learners, the composite score is the average of two parts (interpretive and productive).

Technical Support
If you have any technical difficulties during the test, you must contact Avant Support at the
information below. Please do not contact the department, as we are unable to provide
technical support.
OTHER EXAMS AND CREDENTIALS
If you have Advanced Placement (AP), College-Level Examination Program (CLEP), or
International Baccalaureate (IB) test scores, please submit them to UTA Academic Testing Services.
If you have earned a Global Seal of Biliteracy certificate within the past two years, please
contact the Department of Modern Languages about potential course credits.
If you have another qualifying test result obtained within the last 12 months, you can use those
results to apply for the Global Seal of Biliteracy and test out of lower-level courses through it for
course credits (no letter grades assigned for this option). Please consult a list of other tests and
score requirements on the Global Seal of Biliteracy’s website.
If you would like us to apply for the Global Seal of Biliteracy on your behalf, please contact the
Department of Modern Languages.
Note that a $20 processing fee applies.
