Why did you choose UTA and your major?
I chose to study mechanical engineering for my bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees as I have always enjoyed finding practical ways to apply scientific principles to produce meaningful solutions to real world problems.
What Experiences Beyond the Classroom Helped You Most?
Research work in the EMNSPC lab under my supervisor Dr. Dereje Agonafer has been the most important experience for my success. Addressing real-world, company sponsored problems while still in an academic learning environment provided me with the opportunity to learn from mistakes and develop my technical, leadership and professional skills in a manner that a classroom never could. The publications that I produced under Dr. Agonafer’s mentorship were key factors that differentiated me as a candidate for my internship, which is serving as a major stepping stone from my academic career into a professional career.
What is your current company and position?
I work at Lennox International as an advanced technologies intern, which is an applied research role that couples well with my doctoral study. In this role, I am developing improved modeling and simulation packages for residential refrigeration systems. I am also continuing my doctoral studies part time under Dr. Agonafer.
