Growing up, I never had a clear idea on what I would like to do in the future. I had the skills for a major in STEM but there were so many options I didn't know where to start. When I was a sophomore in high school my mom sent me to a one-week engineering camp that at the time I despised. I was not inclined to leave my house for a week for something I had no interest in.
The first day at the camp they went over all the different flavors of engineering and even then, I still couldn't decide if I would like this. It wasn't until we were tasked to build a robot to follow a predetermined track that I realized engineering was for me. I fell in love with programming and I knew computer science was something I could do for my future.
The best part of studying engineering at UTA is the people I'm in class with. Both the students and faculty make me excited to learn. I feel like all my classmates are working together to make everyone succeed. Nobody is working against each other. I get to meet so many people with their own unique stories on how they got here. I learn so much from collaborating with my classmates and I enjoy the times when we are goofing off when we should really be studying.
All the faculty have such a passion for learning and create such an engaging and comfortable environment to learn. In my higher-level classes the professors really challenged how I think, and that was something I didn't expect to appreciate so much. I'm someone who might ask too many questions, but my professors never discourage my efforts to understand. Each professor is unique and quirky in their own ways, so it's always fun getting to know them.
