The Diversity Studies Minor is designed to strengthen students’ understanding of the interactions of race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, social and economic inequality, disability, aging and religion in defining identity and social relationships. The goal of the minor is to arm students with knowledge, skills, and perspectives essential to civic participation, career development and promoting a just society.

UTA students who complete this minor or some of the courses and later enroll in the MSW program may have specific courses waived toward the graduate degree if they earned a B or higher.

Minor Requirements

• Complete the Diversity Studies Declaration Form;
• Have a Cumulative 2.5 GPA;
  • A 3-hour designated introductory course, and
  • 15 hours of designated coursework chosen from 5 of 7 diversity content areas (1 course per content area):
    • Racial and Ethnic Relations,
    • Social and Economic Inequality,
    • Gender,
    • Religion,
    • Sexuality,
    •  Aging, and
    • Disability,
• Students must earn a C or better in all of their Diversity Studies courses to obtain the minor.
• Finally, students will have a final assessment at the end of their coursework to assess their learning outcomes.

Diversity Studies Minor approved courses

The Social Justice and Social Welfare (SJSW) Minor provides students with a broad overview of social justice perspectives on issues relevant to the social welfare system, its relationship to the market economy, and the historical, political, and cultural factors that shape it. Through coursework, students learn the analytic and practical skills needed to develop, evaluate, and transform social welfare and justice policies. Students gain competency in the core issues of human needs and social development, relevant to many careers.

The minor also enhances students’ preparation for graduate study in social work, law, education, health care, public policy analysis, nonprofit management, social service administration, student affairs, conflict resolution, and others.

Students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 and complete the SJSW Declaration Form.

The 18-HOUR MINOR:

• 3-Hour Required Introductory course:
  • SOCW 3303 Social Welfare Policy and Services
• 6-Hours Required Core courses:
  • SOCW 2302 Human Behavior & The Social Environment
  • SOCW 3307 Diverse Populations
• 3 Courses from the following list:
  • SOCW 3312 Disability & Social Work
  • SOCW 3314 The Latina Experience
  • SOCW 3320 U.S. Immigration Policy and the American Dream
  • SOCW 4314 Intimate Partner Violence
  • SOCW 4335 Aging in American Society
  • SOCW 4366 Seminar in Women’s Issues
• Students must earn a C or better in all of their Social Justice and Social Welfare courses to obtain the minor.
• Finally, students will complete the SJSW Post-Assessment at the end of their coursework to assess their learning outcomes.

* The SJSW Minor does not fully cover the specific skills required for actual social work practice or for social work licensing. Students pursuing a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) are not eligible for the SJSW Minor. Other UTA students who complete the minor or some of the courses, and later enroll in the MSW program, may have some courses waived toward the graduate degree if they earned a B or higher.

Social Justice and Social Welfare Minor approved courses

The Minor in Substance Use Treatment (SUT) adopts a multidisciplinary approach to exploring the biological, psychological, and social aspects of substance misuse. Assessment and treatment methods are grounded in evidence-based practices, allowing students and future professionals to understand and effectively treat individuals, families, groups, and communities. The courses prepare graduates for careers in this field. This popular minor meets the educational requirements for the Texas Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor (LCDC) licensure. However, students must still fulfill the other Texas licensure requirements later.

Students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 and complete the SUT Declaration Form.

Substance Use and Treatment Minor approved courses

The Diversity Studies Undergraduate Certificate Program (DCP) is an interdisciplinary certificate that provides undergraduate students the opportunity to gain specialized knowledge, values, and skills in racial and ethnic relations, gender and sexuality, and social and economic inequality, to advance themselves as successful employees and leaders in our global world.  The certificate enhances a student’s general education, academic major and/or career preparation.

Students selecting the Diversity Certificate must:

• Complete the Diversity Studies Declaration Form and the pre-coursework assessment;
• A 3 credit hour designated introductory course (SOCW 3307), and  9 credit hours of designated coursework in 3 areas:
  • Racial and Ethnic relations
  • Social and Economic Inequality
  • Gender, or Sexuality
• In order to receive the certificate, students must also graduate with any Bachelor's degree from UTA.
• Finally, students will have a final assessment at the end of their coursework to assess their learning outcomes.
