Substance Use Treatment Minor

Program Description

The Minor in Substance Use Treatment will use a multidisciplinary approach to understanding the biological, psychological, and social aspects of substance misuse.  Assessment and treatment methods are based on evidence-informed practices to enable students and future professionals to understand and treat individuals, families, groups, and communities.  The courses prepare graduates for careers in this field.  

Program Objectives

The educational objectives of the minor are to prepare students to:

  • Identify, describe, compare, and evaluate theories and models of substance use, misuse, and addiction.
  • Explain development across the lifespan so as to better understand substance use at different stages of development.
  • Use empathy and other interpersonal skills toward developing a mutually agreed-on focus of work.
  • Collect, organize, and interpret client data as part of the screening, assessment, and engagement processes toward developing a treatment plan for the client.
  • Develop and implement a treatment plan.
Substance Use and Treatment Minor Approved Courses

Students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 and complete the SUT Declaration Form.

Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor Intern Information

If you are interested in earning your Texas LCDCi license through our Substance Use Treatment Minor, you are required to complete the following

All social work major and non-social work students are required to complete 18 hours of Substance Use Disorders coursework covering:

  1. Understanding SUD
  2. Treatment Knowledge
  3. Application to Practice
  4. Professional Readiness

A Texas LCDCi licensure requires 300 hours in practice setting in which at least 20 hours are in each of the following:

  1. Understanding SUD
  2. Treatment Knowledge
  3. Application to Practice
  4. Professional Readiness

All social work majors are required to earn 480 hours in a practicum (SOCW 4951 & 4952 or SOCW 4955 & 4956). Social work students completing their practicum placement at an SUT-related agency can count 300 of these hours towards this LCDCi requirement.

Social work practicums have numerous SOCW prerequisites and are not available to non-social work majors at this time. We encourage non-social work students to inquire about internship opportunities within their major department.
