The first week is about helping your employee feel like part of the team, understand their role and environment, and begin contributing. Use this task list to guide them through a strong start.

Schedule and deliver training tailored to your new hire's needs, including:

  • Your department or school's processes and expectations
  • Their specific role and responsibilities
  • Key systems, workflows, and compliance requirements

Help your new hire feel at home by introducing them to their colleagues in a relaxed setting:

  • Host a welcome lunch, coffee break, or meet-and-greet

Take time to review your department's written policies, procedures, and practices with your new hire.

In addition, explain any informal or unwritten norms that shape your team's culture - for example:

  • How meetings are typically run
  • Communication and response time expectations
  • Dress guidelines for special events or occasions
