UNIV 1131: Student Success

Description

The UNIV 1131: Student Success course is a learning community course that will teach new students academic success skills to aid their transition into college. The goal of the course is to help students identify their individual needs, determine what resources are appropriate, recognize the faculty role in their development, and formulate a plan for an actively engaged and enriched experience from campus to career. Each UNIV 1131 class section has a Peer Academic Leader (PAL), who are students who have already taken the course and assist as a discussion leader for the class under the supervision of the instructor.  PALs provide guidance, raise awareness and understanding of students' majors, and help support collaborative and co-curricular opportunities available within the School/College.

Student Learning Outcomes

  • Recognize and utilize the various academic and personal student resources available at UTA, including those related to financial literacy and wellness.
  • Apply various learning and study strategies to their college classes.
  • Recognize the unique characteristics of their major, including relevant co- and extra-curricular opportunities, and understand the significance of that discipline in today’s world.
  • Identify the role of faculty as experts in providing guidance in academic planning, experiential learning and career goals related to the student’s major.
  • Describe career types in different professions that they might enter after completing their degree at UTA.
  • Develop a sense of self-awareness through teamwork and collaborative efforts.
  • Additional learning outcomes will vary by college

Differences from UNIV 1000

Both courses have an emphasis on academics, but this course has more structured interactions with faculty from the College in which your major is based.  This course is a graded 1 hour credit bearing course that is part of your degree plan.


Courses Excluded from Credentialing

First-Year Undergraduate Courses (UNIV-1000, 1101, 1131):  primary courses offered to first-year freshmen and transfer students by the Division of Student Success, as well as by colleges/schools (UNIV-AR 1131, UNIV-SC 1131, UNIV- EN 1131, etc.).  All full-time UTA faculty and staff with a master's degree or a terminal degree, are eligible to teach UNIV courses. Instructors are vetted and supervised by the Director of New Student Courses with support from staff and the Associate Vice Provost in the Division of Student Success. Peer Academic Leaders (PALs) assist as discussion leaders under the supervision of the instructor. Each PAL participates in at least 88 hours of initial professional development in the first year of employment and at least 45 hours of annual professional development every year thereafter.  The evaluation process for renewal that includes formal classroom observations, faculty recommendation for return, and meeting a minimum requirement of satisfaction in their semesterly evaluation.  All UNIV 1000, 1101,1131 instructors must participate in professional development once per year on student success strategies and pedagogy. 

The UNIV courses focus on academic and career planning, self‐exploration, college success strategies, professional development, and co‐curricular engagement. An outcome of the course is for students to gain knowledge and experiences that will enhance their transition to college and strategies for holistic college success.  The UNIV courses taught by the colleges aim to introduce students the major, options within the major and offer strategies for student success.
