The PAB-accredited Master degree program in City and Regional Planning (MCRP) prepares students for careers as professional planners with public, private and nonprofit organizations. The application of applied research techniques, and skills to “real world” planning problems provides students with practical experience for guiding the future of metropolitan planning and sustainability.”

PROGRAM BENEFITS

The University of Texas at Arlington's City and Regional Planning Program is officially recognized since 1978 by the Planning Accreditation Board. Accredited programs must meet strict professional and academic standards developed by the PAB and its sponsoring organizations, the American Institute of Certified Planners, the Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning, and the American Planning Association.

DEGREE REQUIREMENTS

The degree requires completion of 48 hours of study: 33 hours of core courses, either 6 hours of Thesis or 3 hours of Professional Report and 9-12 hours of elective courses.

A student who is well-prepared through an undergraduate degree in planning or related field and has as well five or more years of relevant and verifiable professional experience may be eligible to complete the degree in 30 credit hours.

This joint emphasis with the Master’s of Public Administration provides the tools and skills necessary to understand topics relevant for supporting environmentally healthy, socially just, and economically sustainable cities and regions - professional credentials to work in interdisciplinary planning and policy fields is in strong demand by DFW local governments, consulting firms, and NGOs.

Attain a comprehensive understanding of the challenges of economic development and urban sustainability, planning theory, methods, and essential planning tools, such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and graphic multimedia, to approach planning issues and challenges. Select courses on economic and sustainable development topics, such as green cities and transportation or cost-benefit analysis.

APPLYING FOR OPTIONAL INTERNSHIP CREDIT

Internships must be approved by the program. A student must submit an Internship Agreement Form describing the duties and hours with a signature from the sponsor before registration for internship credit. At the end of the internship, a student must complete and submit an Internship Report on their experiences and the sponsor must complete and submit an Internship Performance Evaluation verifying the internship requirements have been met. Both these forms must be submitted to the MCRP Director by the end of the semester in order to receive credit and a grade.
