Position: Landscape Architect

COOL SCHOOLS LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT

The Texas Trees Foundation is currently seeking a Cool Schools Landscape Architect to support our STEAM-based, urban forestry-focused, outdoor learning initiative. This position is needed to support our mission to connect students and teachers to nature by planting trees and creating fun and engaging outdoor experiential learning and play areas. These spaces cultivate children’s knowledge and awareness of the natural environment as well as encourage more learning and play outdoors.

Position Description: The Cool Schools Landscape Architect (CSLA) will lead the Cool School design process for multiple campuses in Dallas and possibly in other cities. The design process last 6-8 months where working with the Cool School team, feedback from school and community members is translated into a campus transformation consisting of an average of 100 trees, outdoor learning classroom and amenities, custom-designed playground, walking path, gathering space and additional green infrastructure to enhance the students’ play and learning experience. Additionally, the CSLA will work closely with the Cool Schools Program Manager and other school district project manager(s) to ensure success implementation of Cool School design during the construction and planting phase.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the entire Cool School design process holistically from conception to implementation for each school to include:
  • Site analysis using existing conditions and/or broader campus renovation to produce bubble diagram(s) with existing conditions, assumed renovations and Cool School scope
  • Draft designs to help engagement and planning process
  • Final color-concept rendering showcasing all areas of activation (playground, walking trail, outdoor classroom, trees, pollinator grove, etc.)
  • Implementation plans that include hardscape and landscape plans with detailed specifications that can be used by contractors or folded into overall campus renovation plan
  • Involvement in the construction phase to help ensure visible conformance to the design of the plan
  • Work closely with Cool School Engagement Coordinator(s) to receive and implement design feedback from public engagement meetings and school design charettes
  • Work closely with Education and Urban Forestry Coordinator(s) to implement planting plan into site design as well as utilize urban forestry curriculum and best practices to guide nature-based design
  • Work with PM to create cost estimate related to design
  • Ability to include maintenance, operation, and school limitations into design

    Required Qualifications/Skills:
  • Degree in Landscape Architecture
  • 3 years of professional experience working as a landscape architect
  • Knowledge of ADA standards and best practices when designing on school campuses with inclusivity as a key factor in design
  • Fluency in Auto CAD and full Adobe suite
  • Ability to take concept from site analyze, to conceptual planning to construction documents
  • Extensive knowledge of plant materials such as, but not limited to, native trees, shrubs, flowers, and herbs that do well in urban environments like Dallas, increase biodiversity and
  • Pollinators as well as mitigate air pollution and urban heat.
  • Willingness to aid in construction and project management
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Display high level of independence and self-motivation
  • Ability to handle multiple projects (at different stages of process and various scopes)

Position: Senior Parks Project Manager - Parks, Arts and Recreation Department

Detailed description of position

The purpose of this position is to manage and coordinate the design and construction of park facilities. This is accomplished by reviewing and/or designing parks, recreation facilities and or landscape improvements for the park system, public right-of-ways, and community buildings; providing project management; facilitating project development; and planning for policy and management.   • Facilitates project development by providing cost estimating programming; completing reconnaissance including social, financial, political, and psychographics; providing analysis/synthesis of conceptual design; performing schematic design; developing design; presenting to citizens and City Council; and reviewing construction and bid documents.
  • Plans for policy and management by evaluating and designing park master plans; preparing or assisting in pre-paring plans and city ordinances including those for planning as well as construction specifications; managing grant applications and grant administration.
  • Completes pre contract and pre project activities by formulating RFPs and RFQs; negotiating and preparing agreements with consultants.
  • Ability to prepare conceptual design plans including a strong graphic ability with digital platforms to convey ideas and concepts to leadership, staff and citizens.
  • A Bachelor's Degree in Planning, Parks and Recreation, Landscape Architecture or related field.
  • At least 3 years of experience in Planning, Parks and Recreation, Landscape Architecture or Construction Management.
    Advanced AutoCAD skills preferred.
  • Must be able to provide detailed work samples.
  • Valid Texas Class C Driver's License
