UTA Engineering Summer Camps

Come see what engineers and computer scientists do to make the world a better place!  Come join us for the Engineering and Computer Science Summer Camps at UT Arlington College of Engineering and get introduced to some of the most interesting engineering anywhere.  Our one-week day camp will introduce middle school students to the field of engineering by showing how engineering is connected to personal issues, social concerns, and community interests.  Campers will do projects, visit engineering work, and learn how all different types of engineering help to make the world better!

The College of Engineering at the University of Texas at Arlington creates engineers.  We educate students to enter exciting and fulfilling careers in engineering.  However, for this to happen, students must first decide that they want to try engineering.  But how will they decide this unless they’ve had the chance to learn how fun and meaningful engineering can be?  Therefore, UT Arlington Engineering has created many opportunities for pre-college students to try out engineering so that they will make that decision to pursue an engineering career in the future.  Our largest and longest running activities are the Engineering and Computer Science Summer Camps that are part of our Engineering Summer Program.

All of the Engineering and Computer Science Summer Camps include presentations, team project work, engineering field trips, and hands-on individual engineering activities.   A basic schedule is shown below.

Students at an Engineering Summer Camp

The first major goal of the camps is to introduce students to the variety of engineering fields and careers, so the summer camp presentations and activities take advantage of the fact that UT Arlington has 13 different areas of engineering in which students can earn degrees – Aerospace (AE), Architectural (ArchE), Biomedical (BE), Civil (CE), Computer Engineering (CpE), Computer Science (CS), Construction Management (CM), Electrical (EE), Industrial (IE), Materials Science (MSE), Mechanical (ME), our brand-new Resource and Energy Engineering (REE), and Software (SE).  The also have a Nuclear Engineering (NE) minor and a Sustainable Engineering minor.;

The experience of working on an engineering project with a team and then sharing what they have learned is an engaging activity for the campers and it models engineering in the real world.  This teamwork is the second of the major elements in our engineering summer camps.  The third major component of the camps is for students to visit an example of engineering in the workplace.  Since engineering is such a broad field, we have been able to visit very different environments that still use engineering.  The fourth component of the camps is for each student to put their hands on some technology, tools, and materials and build a fun individual engineering project with certain constraints and goals.  This individual project becomes an item that campers can take home as a memento of their camp experience and that reminds them of the fun they had in focusing on engineering topics and careers.
