About the Department

Kinesiology is an academic discipline that focuses on the study of physical activity and its impact on health, society, and quality of life. Our faculty's vast teaching experience, research expertise, and commitment to service provide rich learning experiences for students across all of the department's academic programs. Also part of UTA's Department of Kinesiology is Maverick Public Health, offering undergraduate and graduate degrees in the field of public health.

Undergraduates have degree options in three academic areas, Exercise Science, Kinesiology, and Public Health. The Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science has three tracks, Clinical & Applied PhysiologyHealth Fitness & Wellness, and Motor & Rehabilitation Sciences. The Bachelor of Arts in Kinesiology also has two tracks: Physical Education Teacher Education, a track leading to Texas Teacher Certification, and a Sports Leadership and Management degree with an emphasis on Coaching and Youth Sports and Sports Leadership available. Each of our undergraduate program areas share a common core of kinesiology courses that provide students with a strong foundation in the sciences of human anatomy, biomechanics, and exercise physiology. Regardless of their discipline, students are prepared to be active professionals who are capable of impacting the overall health and well-being of their students, clients, and patients.

Graduate students interested in the effects of exercise on health and well-being should consider our Master of Science in Exercise Science and Doctor of Philosophy in Kinesiology programs. This Master's program is a research-based program focusing on the effects of exercise on health and well-being, and provides graduate students the opportunity to build their research skills under the mentorship of a departmental faculty member. In addition, the Doctor of Philosophy in Kinesiology program prepares students to be scholarly researchers who generate new knowledge in the field of Kinesiology, with the skills to apply existing scholarship to questions concerning the prevention, assessment, and treatment of motor difficulties, chronic diseases, and musculoskeletal injuries. The program offers three tracks: Movement and Rehabilitation Sciences, Applied Physiology, and Physical Education. Our PhD program in ranked by the National Academy of Kinesiology.

Athletic Training is the Department's third academic area and offers a Master of Science in Athletic Training for those interested in a career as a certified athletic trainer. Entry into this program is competitive and selective, with one cohort admitted per year. Students in this program focus on scientific theory, skill acquisition, application of skills, and professional behaviors in a variety of classroom, laboratory and clinical fieldwork settings in order to build the experiences and expertise needed to pass the BOC Exam and to be competent, creative and caring athletic trainers.

Public health seeks to improve the health of communities. UTA offers three public health degrees: the Bachelor of Science in Public Health, the Graduate Certificate in Public Health Practice and the Master of Public Health. No matter where you are in your public health career, our programs will build your skills and help you improve your practice.
