UT CAP (Coordinated Admissions Program)

Program Information

The University of Texas System developed the Coordinated Admission Program (CAP) to expand the admission options available to students interested in enrolling at The University of Texas at Austin, the system’s flagship university.

In general, CAP makes it possible for some freshman applicants to UT Austin to begin their studies at another UT System university. After completing CAP requirements during their freshman year, students transfer to UT Austin to complete their undergraduate studies.

If you are offered and decide to participate in CAP, you don’t have to apply for admission to the UT System university you attend during your freshman year. Simply complete the CAP agreement to let us know that you want to participate. You’re guaranteed admission to most majors in UT Austin’s College of Liberal Arts upon successful completion of the program (although admission to specific Liberal Arts majors are not guaranteed). And just like any other prospective transfer student, you’ll be able to compete for admission to majors in colleges outside of Liberal Arts.

Info Sessions

All new incoming UT CAP students should attend a UTA information session to learn about the program and its requirements. These sessions will happen after a student completes their UT CAP agreement and is admitted to UTA. Info sessions will be offered in April and May.

Info sessions will go over UT CAP requirements, enrollment requirements, approved coursework, and provide next steps for students in the UT CAP journey. Follow-up information will be sent out to students who attend a session.

To register, students will need the following. Please choose the appointment labeled UT CAP Virtual Information Session.

  • Their 10-digit student ID number from UTA
  • UTA student email
  • Major of Interest

Current students should book an individual advising appointment each semester with the UT CAP advisor to go over their process, courses, and questions.

UT CAP Enrollment at UTA

To fulfill the 30-hour UT CAP requirement, all credit hours must be earned through UTA. This means enrolling in UTA courses during the Summer, Fall, and Spring semesters, beginning with the required Summer term.

⚠️ Important: UT CAP at UTA is not a fully online program. While some courses may be offered online or in hybrid formats, online course availability is limited and not guaranteed. Students should be prepared to take in-person classes, including during the summer.

To have their advising hold removed and be eligible to register for classes, students must:

  • Submit a UT CAP agreement in UT Austin’s MyStatus portal for UTA, pay the $75 application fee to UTA, and accept the UTA offer of admission
  • Attend a UT CAP Information Session offered by UTA
  • Complete the UTA Academic Advising course in Canvas
Once all steps are completed, an advisor will lift the advising hold. Students are encouraged to complete these steps early to maximize their registration options—especially for high-demand or online courses.

See the recommended semester-by-semester credit hour breakdown below to stay on track.

Application Questions

No, you don’t. If you complete and submit the online CAP agreement, UT Austin will send the application materials to UTA. You will need to submit a final high school transcript to UTA showing your graduation date.

  • There is not a waitlist. If you were not able to submit to UTA, you can choose another participating UT CAP school or apply as a non-CAP student to UTA. UTA has a limited amount of spots available for eligible UT CAP students.
  • UTA accepts agreements on a first-come, first-served basis. Once UTA has received the agreements to reach the limit, the ability to submit the UT CAP agreement is closed.
  • If you are interested in attending UTA as a non-CAP student, you can do so by submitting an application for admission and the supporting documents before the freshman deadline of June 1.
  • Please contact the UTA Office of International Education for more information Visit Here.

  • Reach out to UTA’s CAP Advising Team capadvisor@uta.edu to discuss your course enrollment as an international student.

Orientation Questions

Registration will open mid-February and you will receive an email to remind you to sign up for your orientation experience. You can sign up for orientation online. For questions or more information about new student orientation contact orientation@uta.edu or (817) 272-3213.

Enrollment - Hold Questions

Review the meningitis immunization information on the Office of the Registrar website. You will need to submit proper documentation to have this hold cleared. You will be dropped from your classes if you do not complete this enrollment requirement at least 10 days before the start of your first semester taking courses.
Review the Texas Success Initiative (TSI) website for details on what TSI is and complete the necessary steps to clear your hold. If you have questions, you can email tsi@uta.edu. You will not be able to register for courses until this hold is cleared.

Students must sign up and attend Orientation for this hold to be removed. Visit the Orientation website for more information on how to register for Orientation. UT CAP students should attend an Orientation designated for summer start students, typically held in April or May each year.

  • Incoming freshman students must complete the self-guided academic advising short course in Canvas to have their advising hold removed, receive a degree plan, and register for classes. Incoming students will be enrolled in the course in late March. Students should complete this as soon as possible to avoid delays in registering for summer and fall classes.
  • Current students will need to meet with an academic advisor during the semester to get their hold removed.

Enrollment - CAP Questions

  • Yes, all incoming freshmen, including UT CAP students, are expected to take a student success course based on their major of interest.
    • The student success course will transfer to UT Austin as an elective and will be applied toward the required 30 credit hours.
    • More information about the course is provided in the self-guided academic advising short course in Canvas and will be provided by the CAP advising team during orientation and registration.
  • No, the UT CAP program requires that students must successfully complete courses that total 30 transferable credit hours during a UT CAP year. Hours must be from the approved UT CAP course list and taken at a participating university.
    • Dual credits and test credits can be counted towards prerequisites and/or degree requirements but will not count towards the 30-credit hour UT CAP requirement.
  • Please let your academic advisor know of any college credits to avoid re-taking a course. Duplicate courses will show as illegal repeat on the UTA official transcript.
    • Test credits must be petitioned to have them officially posted on a college transcript.
    • Test credits do not expire and can be petitioned at UTA or after you transition to UT Austin.
    • Dual credits or other college credits are posted on an official college transcript and must be sent to UTA.
    • High school transcripts cannot be used for official college credits.
  • Prerequisites are the courses that must be successfully completed before advanced courses can be taken.
    • Prerequisites are normally taken before Math, Science/Technology, and English/Literature courses
    • All UTA students, including UT CAP participants, must successfully complete the needed prerequisite(s) to enroll in courses with a prerequisite requirement.
  • The UT CAP degree plan has courses with prerequisites listed. The degree plan will also have prerequisites listed for intended UT Austin majors.
  • Participants are encouraged to identify these classes and confirm with their UTA advisor what they are eligible to take.
    • Please note that per the UT CAP agreement, your UTA advisor is responsible to advise on the approved list of courses. They do not advise on UT Austin majors.
    • All questions related to UT Austin majors should be directed to UT Austin.

Enrollment - General Questions

  • Each college level course is valued by a certain number of credit hours. The credit hours that are accepted by other universities are known as transferable credits.

  • All courses on the designated CAP list have been approved by UT Austin and are guaranteed as recognized transfer credits to UT Austin.

  • Please note that UT Austin requires a minimum of a “C” grade to accept the course as transferable credits.

CAP Questions

  • Students who successfully complete the UT CAP requirements during their freshman year are guaranteed admission to the College of Liberal Arts.
  • UT CAP students interested in applying to other majors at UT Austin, like Business, Natural Sciences, Engineering and Communication will need to compete for these majors as they are not part of the Liberal Arts.
    • Students interested in Architecture or Interior Design should carefully consider their options before enrolling in UT CAP. Majors in the School of Architecture are not available for UT CAP students.
    • Students interested in Nursing should carefully consider their options before enrolling in CAP. Majors in the School of Nursing are not available for CAP students.
    • UT CAP students can ask to be considered in the transfer applicant pool for a non-Liberal Arts major without jeopardizing their automatic admission to Liberal Arts, but admission to most majors is highly competitive.
  • The participating UT CAP universities cannot guarantee that the courses you take as a freshman will help you to prepare for transfer into programs outside the College of Liberal Arts.
  • The participating UT CAP university you select for your freshman year will provide courses that will transfer as part of the university’s core curriculum, but they may not all serve as prerequisite courses for some majors at UT Austin.
  • If your goals clearly point to one of our most competitive majors, you should consider attending a college or university where your pathway to your desired major is more certain.
  • Ensure you are meeting the UT CAP requirements:
    • Complete 30 approved hours during your UT CAP year
    • Earn a minimum 3.2 GPA
    • Complete a math course from the approved list
  • Make sure to complete all requirements in MyStatus.
    • If competing for a non-Liberal Arts major, submit statement of purpose and resume
  • Order a transcript before June 1st and send electronically to UT Austin. Be sure your spring grades have posted before you order. For instructions, please visit the Registrar website.
  • In order to come to UTA as a UT CAP student, you must attend the summer semester. Students may check the academic calendar for start dates. Academic Calendar.

  • Please note that UT Austin will only accept courses taken at UTA and courses taken at another intuition can make a student ineligible for CAP.

Financial Aid Questions

  • Your federal aid will remain the same, which means you will still be eligible for the Federal Pell Grant, if you meet requirements, and Federal Direct Loans as a CAP student. However, if you were a recipient of any UTA merit-based scholarship, including the Presidential Scholarship or Maverick Academic Scholarship, you would no longer be eligible since these are only for students who will pursue their degree at UTA. For a list of all UTA merit-based scholarships, visit the UTA Scholarships website.

    UTA Scholarships
  • Depending on the type of aid you receive, the amounts may differ.
  • Enrolling in less than full time (12 credit hours) will reduce your grant amount. For example, if you enroll in 9 credit hours, you will receive 75% of your Federal Pell Grant amount.
  • On the other hand, federal direct loans are typically not affected by being less than full-time, since only half-time enrollment is required (6 credit hours).
  • For more information regarding Financial Aid disbursement requirements, visit UTA’s Financial Aid website.
